Photography Gear 'Reviews' On YouTube Are A Joke....

There's a problem with reviews on YouTube, but it's not what you think....

Camera, lens, lighting, reviews of all kinds are pretty much impossible to do right in my opinion.

What are your thoughts on the state of gear reviews here on YouTube?

And someone who is making reviews I am on the same page. In general, I am a big fan of Linus Tech tips the way they do it is how we try to do it! If there’s no exchange of money, it’s a review and we can be completely honest with our thoughts and feelings about the product. If it’s paid in any way it’s no longer review it’s an overview and we have to let the audience know that it’s not a review and to take everything we say with the understanding that we were paid to promote this product. I have found brands don’t like this as much. They would prefer people hide sponsorships but you develop more trust your audience this way.

I always thought that "some" of my fellow Youtubers I like to watch were actually pimping products to make $$$ without thinking of what they were actually doing, putting others in debt buying the latest & greatest. I have been using a Canon 6D for years and get fantastic results with the latest software and great lighting. I've always enjoyed your content. If you stick to the basics, you tube channels in my opinion do a way lot more in viewership that those that are product pimps.

I’m glad you made this video and I’m planning to make a similar video based on a recent incident I had with a BIG NAME YouTuber in the photography genre. He made a video about sponsorships and I questioned him on how he can stay unbiased when the company is paying him. He got VERY defensive with me! LonTV also made similar video. We need more videos like this warning new photographers of the reality of YouTube reviews!

Don’t worry Miguel. Consumers are biased. They want to hear youtubographers talk about the camera they like

I try to be as unbiased as possible but completely agree with you. I am always biased. In my videos I try not to share any opinions and just demo the units and let the viewers decide if they like it or not. The smell test lol 😂 I still like watching the biased reviews though lol 😂 Great thoughts and video!

I get what you say about those day 1 review videos. I have the opinion that they are not fit for purpose, however. Most are little more than product previews with basic tests the reviewers could perform in the limited time they had the product. I much prefer long term reviews, but those are more difficult to make, take longer, and as you said, likely get won’t get the views. It is sad that quality journalism has to be sacrificed, because it doesn’t pay to be thorough.

I think you should watch every review with your own bias, based on your own experience, use case for the gear, and preferences for brands and products you like.
I don't think reviews on YouTube are less objective than visiting a camera store and talking to a single shop clerk, at least you can select the reviewers you like and watch multiple videos on the same topic to see difference in emphasis and conclusion. I quite like that.

And I think too the companies steer marketing, whereby they sometimes make mistakes. Selling the Canon R5 as a great video camera was a mistake, even though Canon made an excellent photo camera with video features. I think Fuji is making a similar mistake with their GFX100ii launch. This causes reviewers to be overly positive or negative about gear, while in fact the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

4:40 - Miguel was the guy that would eat the chocolate and vanilla in the "Napolitana" ice cream gallon, but would leave the pink stuff alone 😄 (like most sane people)

Don't worry a lot of nerds had the same bias against apple ;)
Mkbhd had the best take about reviews and bias. For the objectivity VS subjectivity of a review you just have to focus and empirical data when you can like sharpness or speed of autofocus with a vs b testing. And for the subjective parts you just state your preferences and bias, so the person who has the same knows what he's getting and the person who doesn't care about that specific thing can ignore that fact

Keep in mind too we forgot to put in that, THEY CANNOT UNDER CONTRACT reveal the talking points, the inserted "excitement" areas as well as the fact that they have these products earlier than most, embargos and the like....the problem is yeah these guys gotta pay bills....and sadly these companies pay in advance. thats the real. Im glad you touched on this we spoke about this back in new york.
