What's depressing is the relentless march of time. Remember in the movie, the adult Gordie says 1959 was "a long time ago, but only if you measure in terms of years, " and that felt so distant. That was a span of only 26 years. Today, we're already 37 years past the release of the movie. A much longer time ago. Where the heck did all the years go?

I was 19 when I saw the movie in the theater. Last night was the first time I watched it since. WOW, still very powerful, both the movie and the song. At the time, even though I understood it, there was only a hint of the true depth of the meaning of the friendships of youth. After becoming old and not having any of those friends of youth around me anymore, this movie and song resonate on such a deep level now.
