The reason the iphone 7 can't focus in the dark is because it mistakes noise for details. Phones often use the contrast between pixels to determine if the image is in focus.

No offense, but the 7+ is just fine for me. i still can't see the cost of upgrading to the 8+ for a slightly faster processor and a SLIGHTLY better camera that hasn't even been improved by Apple's software. You'll have to do MUCH better, Apple.

iPhone 7+’s camera also improved a bit in iOS 11. I always turn on HDR when shooting and delete the regular or HDR image afterward depending on which I like more. I’ve noticed with iOS 11 HDR images are brighter than before while still not blowing out highlights. Shot to shot speed under HDR seems a bit slower so I guess iOS 11 is stacking more shots to reduce noise and improve color.

A11 is much faster so more stacking and the hardware computational photography in A11 made HDR instant.

I cannot wait to see this done with the iPhone X (when it is released). The upgrades to the telephoto sensor and the fact that the second sensor is also optically stabilized is likely to give you more flexibility in low light. That skyline shot of the city may come out less blurry with the X.
