"Nothing to write home about"?? I completely disagree. I would write something along these lines:
"Dear Mother & Father. I have arrived at the airbase after finally passing the flight tests. I've been assigned to a squadron flying the I-16. This.. abomination, this stubby little aircraft is inferior to just about everything the Nemetskiy fly - I will probably be dead within a week. Tell Katyusha I love her, goodbye. -Your loving Son Ivan."

When you have an underperformer in terms of speed and rate of climb, but one that is quite maneuverable at low and slow, then I advise you stay near the ground. It eliminates one entire dimension from your high performance opponents. It brings them "down" to your level.

Advanced when first produced. First with retractable landing gear. But like many aircraft in late 1930's and early 1940s quickly eclipsed by rapid advancements in technology.

I loved this fighter in World of Warplanes back when it was pretty much World of Tanks in the skies... Many kills in the I-16 types, and in any dogfight I can out turn anyone that chases to the point where the guy gives up, makes a mistake and crashes, breaks off and becomes a victim to my guns or gets killed by other friendlies!

I wonder how the I-16 would do compared to a Brewster Buffalo. The I-16 always reminded me of a 55 gallon drum can with wings. I think it's a beautiful plane in it's own way. I know the I-16 and I-15 duked it out with Nates and Claudes in the skies over China. Would love to see that.

Known in UK and US as Polikarpov P-16 and name Pea-Shooter by the Americans. Was bought in considerable numbers after the war by pilots in the US for air racing where several are still active.

Russian pilots of WW II werer saying "If one fugured out how to fly I-16, he will fly any other fighter for sure". This plane has rear balance center and very picky to the pilot skills, so it was hard to control even for moderate skilled pilot. But yes, many skilled Russian pilots liked this plane for its maneurability. German pilots, on the other side, were saying "never blockthe Rat into the corner", which means never get into maneurable dogfight with this plane, especially in low altitudes. Many famous Russian aces of WWII started with this plane, for example, Boris Safonov defending Murmansk and protecting allied convoys above Barentz Sea first was flying the I-16, then finally he changed it to P-40 Kittyhawk supplied by one of these convouys from England. First modifications of the I-16 (designed and engineered by Nikolay Polikarpov) were introduced in 1935, and by this time it was one of the best fighters in the world, but yes, by 1941 it became oblolete already and was outclassed by German Me-109.

So it's finally out for EA? Nice.By the way it had been speculated that the nickname "Mosca" was orginally coined not because of the look or the fly characteristics of the I-16, but because when they were first shipped into Spain the package had the word Москва on it which is pronounced Moskva. 6:43 1100 HP`at Take Off Power and 900 to 950 HP MIL power at Sea Level.

+Bis18marck70 *Officially, this Russian design was the Central Engineering Bureau (Централное Конструкторьское Бюро) Fighter (Истребеытел) 16 Modification (Изделие) 24, * although one Nikolai Nikolaevich Polikarpov was chief engineer on this type. The I-16 was a 1934 design and already obsolete when Barbarossa 1941 broke. With Jakovljov, Mikojan-Gurevich, and Lavochkin-Gorbunov-Gudkov hard at work on types that could oppose the Focke-Wulf 190, I-16 losses were replaced by better aircraft.

Wow! What a way to present information, through an actual real-time simulation. And do I recognize my favorite German accent guy? Whose depth of knowledge of the ww2 aviation history is UNSURPASSED? Thank you! This is awesome! I learn more from this than by flying the simulator myself! Great medium! Re-live reality!

And the Russian "I" (Ikratkoyeh) is pronounced "Ee", so EEshak.
"Russians called it yastrebok (young eagle) or ishak (little donkey". Here it is in Russian: "ишак" Pronounced (as above) Eeshak.
