I mean, things get expensive when the ring comes off...😅

While working in a machine shop we froze the new seat in dry ice plus .004 tight fit when we machined it to over size. Drove the seat in and installed a hammer dowel over the valve guide mandrel and used a 3 lb sledge maybe 2 hits to peen the metal over so the new seat could not come out. To late for this one but you would think the mfg would do that to all cylinder heads. Great job guys youve got a great shop!!

Don’t forget the heater bolt that falls off and goes into the engine and takes out cylinder 6

Just poor engineering and manufacturing now days. 😢

I wish we had WWII merlin valve seats, threaded in with a counter rotation to the valve guide, easy replacement and never falls out

so monitor egr temp, nox sensors, high pressure fuel rail temp and pressure, along with injector balance to avoid combustion chamber damage such as this.. Edge insight/ banks gauges hogging the dash.
Probably easier to cruise down the road with a snap- on versus edge hooked up and monitor all critical PIDs to avoid this type of damage. Wow! Regular oil changes, fuel filter changes, buying top tier diesel and high quality DEF that is kept cool and within date, air filters changed keeps growing to keep on rolling.

I'm beginning to suspect Dave doesn't have a wife and just spawned more of himself.

Yup gotta watch those egts. I remember when I got my first diesel I didn’t know anything about keeping the egt’s down. Glad I learned without any major damage

Had a valve drop. 10 cent clip vs 15k in bottom end repairs.

We had to completely replace a Cummins 555 in a concrete mixer one time. Certified Cummins journeyman mechanic dropped two of the little washers that go underneath the flywheel bolts. Instead of opening a new pack of bolts and washers, he grabbed two washers out of the bolt bin.
They were too thick. Within 3 days it came back with a broken crankshaft and we had to replace the entire engine.

Dave should start a trade shool building repairing vehicles engines Trans ect.

Engineers really need to talk to mechanics. If the fix is simply putting a larger valve seat, then that should be built into the engine to start with. American engine and transmission quality is gone.

I wouldn't be surprised if the OD dimension of the insert was under size. I used to work where these valve seats are made and thanks to the UAW, the quality of workers there is horrible. I never worked with such lazy incompetent people in my life and to try and get rid of these employees is nearly impossible. The company is stuck with them. I've seen employee's take parts that were completely out of specification and send them through. The longest 20 months of my life.

I truly hope the new generation 'dimpled' (Golf ball - like surface + ceramic coating) pistons, really helps lower exhaust gasses temperatures, thus help reduce those catastrophic damages.
I'd respectfully suggest you one more in- depth video regarding that interesting topic. So many thanks & Blessings to Dave / Miles + Team for their truly hard and dedicated work and sharing your wealth of wisdom / experience with us followers..

Them pesky seats and guides. They love falling out at that perfect moment that you are strapped for cash and no backup wheels

Question: How does a valve seat get past the valve and remain intact? Asking for a friend.

If the problem is high EGTs the solution is not to take the engine apart and replace the valve seats.

Gents, let your motors warm up before smoking the tires. Exhaust temp spike !
