There were two possible outcomes, either he was going to pause, or he was going to go scorched earth and enforce his tariffs.

Scorched earth was on track to cost him the house, the senate and possibly the presidency whilst putting the US at risk of financial collapse through treasury bond collapse.

Pausing would take the US back from the brink he put it in.

His playing chicken with China so he could single them out has probably been his ambition from the start, from 2014 or before. Within hours of China calling his bluff he had the ammo he needed and stepped back from US collapse.

The question is, and this remains to be seen over the coming months, was he too late? Has global disgust in US political coercion sent the global consumer over the edge to the point they'll pay more to avoid US goods?

Somehow I doubt most of his supporters can even comprehend the implications of what he's done and where the US stands at present.
