Rishi Sunak does not think the leadership contest "is in the bag", according to supporter and Home Secretary Grant Shapps.

Mr Shapps spoke to Sky News following Boris Johnson's swift exit from the Conservative party leadership race.

He added, "I think Boris Johnson was actually in many ways a very impressive prime minister."

We want a General Election. Why is Sharps still allowed to be in Government knowing his past

A man once said "if voting actually mattered they wouldn't allow the common man to do it" or words to that effect .... This is the proof a bunch of MPs electing their own leadership based on what is best for them personally, and the people of Britain who they allegedly stand for get absoloutely no say in the matter whatsoever ....

I don’t think Grant Schapps and the conservatives understand the level of discontent there will be if they don’t call a general election.

Once again the Tories put party before country.

It’s a big game isn’t it? He just can’t stop smirking, just like he did throughout the pandemic, horrible man

Is there a good reason why the public shouldn't have a say?

Rishi Sunak is deluding himself thinking his party isn't too racist to support him. I'm seeing Tory voters and members explicitly saying he's not British, despite BoJo being the one who was born outside the UK.

These guys have had their fun, this has go to the nation. They're treating the country like it’s a Tory personal play thing.

Bojo's way of saying I stepped aside to allow Rishi to take the top position but, of course, if I had continued to stay in the race then I would have won and once again being PM, but I'm so graceful and charitable I allowed Rishi this opportunity. In other words, Bojo's ego has been bruised terribly and he is a sore loser.

Useless home secretary, useless transport secretary just plain useless

Boris is just giving Rishi enough rope so when he messes up big time the party will beg him to come back.

Thank the conservatives for making it law that only the prime minister can request an early general election.

@1:33 “I think it’s a bit too early for Boris to make a return.” Lol. It’s *always* going to be ‘too early’ for Bozo to make a return. He’s done for, politically. His coffin has been signed, sealed and delivered by the British public.

BJ jumped on the first plane like a desperate refugee out of Kabul ending his holiday in the Caribbea and then says he's going to step aside, even though he's says he has over 100 backer's and could win it. It is just another example of the craziness of this shambolic man and shambolic country.

If Mordaunt were to get the 100 MP support and it went to the membership vote, then Sunak would likely lose again. Boris bottled it rather than be a loser.

...Boris had the support of 102 but pulled out "for the good of the country".
