Filing a business name in Texas can be a simple process. Fill out an assumed name certificate form (DBA), sign it in front of a notary and then file it in the county clerk's office of the county that your business is based in.

If you have questions, you can call your county clerk, your local SBDC or give us a call! We're here to help.

Wow thank you so much for this video! Straight but thorough and gave me the answers I needed. I was stressing myself out the last 2 days trying to figure out the steps whether to file with SOS or is it just a county level thing. It gets really confusing. Thank you, exactly what I needed 😆

What if I change my mind and want to change the DBA to an LLC? Does this supercede the DBA or cancel out the county registry of the DBA? Good info though.

Please answer! What if you’ve had your business and didn’t have a dba for 1 year?

On Item 3 on the Assumed Name Certificate, do I check Other if I’m a sole proprietor? It’s not listed.

I filed a certificate of reservation of Entity Name in 2015. It states:
"The undersigned, as secretary of state...hereby certifies that the above entity name has been reserved in this office ....for the exclusive use of.... for a period of 120 days after the date hereof."
Can you please let me know what this means? I was under the impression that it is on file for 10 years...
