Winamp Source Code Repo Deleted

Less than one month after source code release, Winamp GitHub repo has vanished.

It turns out Winamp really did whip the llama's ass

There is word from llama group. They said that the amount of propiertary code including in winamp which cant be released, makes the winamp sourcecode inoperable, meaning developers have no ability to develop and test features in winamp as it can not be compiled without these proprietary source code. Llama group made the repository private and are attempting to get exceptions for these files.

People might clown on whomever decided this was a good idea, the not so funny side of this story is that there are lots of companies that said internally "Hey, is there a way to open source part of our code, but in a way that only benefit us?"

They're better off keeping it quiet until the lawyers sort it out. There's definitely some blame-shifting going on behind the scenes.

Winamp still has a place in my heart. I have never been in a place of comfort with my music player as I have been with Winamp. It is still true tho that Winamp is old. The world kept turning. I don't want Winamp. I want more. ^^

Perhaps the leaders of the Llama group became aware of all the potential legal trouble, spoke with their lawyers to understand the risks, and decided to play it safe and take it down.

They probably got a cease and desist from someone. Kind of a shame really, but they being disingenuous with the licence in the first place, so I don't think it was the altruistic offering that we initially thought it was.

I loved their installer back in the day. It was free and great to package my then hobby programming projects in a neat installer. Everybody forgot about that side project they had. Always had the heart in the right place until corporate came along and whipped their asses.

I've seen some of the pull requests for the main repo, most of them boiled down to "I deleted everything, pls merge." It was wild.

winamp is awsome. i downloaded it onto every PC in the highschool. there was a plugin where if you played a cd, it would rip it. everyone thought they were just playing the CD's on the computer. massive mp3 library in the highschool library.

Replace a couple of drying capacitors, the blown semiconductors and balance them, clean the switch contacts and knob sliders, put the lid back on. Or in this case the equivalent of all of that. Your amp should be fine after the proper treatment.

this really shows off what happens when you just try to open source a proprietary program. unlike a program developed from the ground up to be open source, a proprietary program can also be filled with other third party proprietary blobs that render the source code of the program itself inoperable.

Probably due to the copyright code being included in the repo that they didn't have the right to publish, and to a lesser extent, the negative feedback from the community
