Claudia Walker introduces the Mercury Phoenix Trust Focus Charity for 2017: Medical Action Myanmar (MAM)

In 2016 Claudia Walker, head of the The Mercury Phoenix Trust, visited Myanmar during a trip to South East Asia. During her time in the country she met with two inspirational people - Dr. Ni Ni Tun and Dr. Frank Smithius (ex Director of the Dutch division of Medicines Sans Frontiere) who together set up Medical Action Myanmar (MAM) in 2009 to provide much needed medical services especially in remote rural areas. On her return to the UK, she met with the MPT team and relayed what she has seen, who she had met and came up with ideas on how the MPT could get involved.

“I met some extraordinary people…I was so taken by them.” Claudia Walker, MPT

The Mercury Phoenix Trust had in the past donated to projects in Burma/Myanmar carried out by Christian Aid, Help Age International, Save the Children, Health Poverty Action and Metta, but now wanted to do more. It was decided that MAM were to be the Mercury Phoenix Trust ‘Focus Charity’ for 2017, meaning that a portion of all money raised within 2017 will go directly to MAM projects and their efforts in combating HIV / AIDS. We are, of course, still giving to other projects across the globe, that never stops, but we will be hearing from MAM team, posting their updates and highlighting their story throughout 2017.
