The earthquakes this month were among the most powerful ever recorded in Turkey.
Tens of thousands of people were killed in that country and neighbouring Syria, and many more were injured.
The rescue phase is coming to an end with the focus shifting to providing shelter, food - and schooling.
Yet rescue teams continue to work non-stop to find survivors trapped in the dark, without food and water, and in freezing temperatures.
But despite the odds, there are some incredible stories of survival.
But what physical and emotional toll will this disaster have on survivors and emergency workers?

Thank you for reporting the stories of the victims with compassion, respect and reverence. The other news channels are just exploiting them for views.

I very much sympathize with the people of Turkey and Syria. I've been praying since the earthquake that the aid would be allowed in. If the U.N. or any country went in without permission they would be accused of invading a sovereign country and this could mean war. No country will do that. As you see surely the rich Arab countries should have been the first to do their best to get in with aid and rescue workers. Rescue workers were allowed in, in fact asked for their help by Turkey's leader and came as quick as they could reach the location. The same would be true for Syria but for their government and the rebels.

Well, the Syrians have no one to blame but their ruthless dictator, Basr Al-Assad, for the rescue and aid efforts in northern Syria which are even far less than in Turkey because of his interference and blockage of those efforts. In fact, privately, he may actually be pleased that the earthquake killed or devastated many rebels there whom his military would have killed anyway.

I don't think, that this is only the fault of western countries, even if I can understand the bitterness of all this poor victims. I listened to private helpers who packed several trucks with necessary goods for syrian people and could not cross the borders from turkey to syria. Either they were stopped, because the roads were damaged or there was no military, which could protect them from rebel troups, who would plunder their trucks. Unfortunately there are some "wild west" conditions in some areas. And by the way, the same problems happened in turkey, inspite of getting more help. Some areas are very dangerous and rescue teams could reach to those people often very late. Now you need protection by armed soldiers, because you can be robbed and shot by criminal groups. Our austrian rescue team had to seek shelter outside of Antakya, because they got in heavy gunfire from gangs who were shooting on each other. I just want to tell that, because in bad times there is always a need for the guilty

Do people in NW Syria realize that the region of Turkey where the aid was meant to come from (Gaziantep/Hatay) suffered 10 times more damages and deaths? The roads are damaged, there is no fuel, the humanitarian workers, the truck drivers are DEAD or burying their families. Not a lot of people showed up for work in the days after the earthquakes. Can they divert aid from their own dying communities?

The second man who spoke is rightfully raging !! I’m glad he explained that this is much more than just mental trauma that people are dealing with. THERES PEOPLE WHO ARE DYING. I live in the US. I wish I could help. I’ve donated but I don’t know what else to do. God bless these people.

Where's the Syrian leader Asad showing support for his people? Where is the UN? This is shameful! They were slow to respond. The citizens are showing courage with their rescue efforts.

This is so sad. Imagine having survived the earthquake only to be left waiting under the rubble.

No doubt I will be censored but I'm tired of hearing this. There were threats on both sides do not cross the border no matter where you came from. The threat was basically if you cross the border it could be bad for you.... What are you supposed to do with that. People wanting to come and we're ready to come but we're threatened to not come. What I do understand is 0 they are still negotiating to come and help but I know it's late in the hour

Save lives! Deliver care& relief. 🔱🙏
Syria needs as much humanitarian attention as Turkiye does. Being selective and discrimination is condemnable. 😭

From India, our heart goes out to those who are devastated by the unprecedented natural calamity in freezing winter in Syria and Turkiye.
India for sure will be up there before anybody, Operation Dost already launched, to deliver humanitarian aid at this critical time.
India knows about poverty & misery and suffered many calamities of nature and from accross the border, the land of pure & pious, and elsewhere. Pak refused shia tomato arrived from the well meaning neighbour during the recent floods. 🤦

Incidentally, during covid period, Turkiye had refused shiploads of wheat from India, after reaching their ports, for flimsy reasons. May be out of arrogance or ignorance. Perhaps the leadership placed peace above kindness. Humility begets humanity.

Humanity is the noblest of all virtues.

Nevermind, supply as much aid as early as possible for humanities sake. Help first and foremost always. 🤲🌾🪺🌽🚚🚑⛱️⛺❤️🪷🇮🇳

Can anyone confirm the reports that gangs are having feild day and robbing and threatening people. Are these the same terrorist and jihadis or petty criminals?

Almighty is great!
