Putin critic Navalny defiant as Russian court rejects his appeal, allies detained

Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny said the governing power wants to "shut him up" by detention and to mute the voices of his allies as a court ordered him to be kept in jail, rejecting an appeal against his detention and shrugging off calls by the West and tens of thousands of his Russian supporters for his release.

Navalny, a prominent critic of President Vladimir Putin, was remanded in custody for 30 days on Jan. 18 after flying back to Russia from Germany for the first time since being poisoned with a military-grade nerve agent in August.

A court at the time ordered him detained for alleged parole violations, which he denied.

Navalny appeared in court on Thursday by video link from jail, railing against what he called absurd allegations trumped up by authorities to sideline him for political reasons.

"You won't succeed in frightening us. We are the majority... I'm happy that more and more people understand that the law is on our side, that we're in the right," he told the presiding judge.

It isn't Russia's Court. It is unfortunately Putin's Court.

We are all watching "A profile of Courage" - No matter what happens, this Man Alexei Navalny will go down in History as a Hero, and if he disappears... a Martyr as well.

That is really interesting that Canadian mainstream media cover in details the antigovernment protests in Russia and completely ignored the protests that happened in Toronto last week. The brutality of the Toronto police was outrageous.

We do the exact same thing here Except the only difference is we never hear from the people they silence ever again so it’s not like Russia is crossing a line all on their own

Whoever tried to poison him multiple times did a very poor job. Maybe the poison is just for show.

This guy likes to complain too much. Come on folks let's be realistic if it Canadian where did be doing the things that he is done in Russia the Canadian would be locked up in Canada for doing this very same things. And if you don't believe me then you should give your head a shake. Get a protest going and go out of the boundaries of the protest area that's called an agitator. Encourage sanctions on your country that's called being a traitor. So who cares what this blogger thinks and or his supporters. Because it's all political garbage for a guy who isn't even a politician
