For new players these rules are very complicated but for players who are more used to the custodes this makes them much more flexible and interesting than just 'we dont die'

They had explained the katah stance stuff in an article but they have done a great job making everything convoluted

It's the Necrons Command Protocol mechanic. It's not overly complicated you just have to plan your list of stances.

Not that I am a Custodes player or collector, but I am disappointed that GW didn't see fit to re-do the normal Contemptor Dreadnought model which is and has always looked garbage, or produce a really substantial upgrade 'skin' for the Land Raider and Rhino for Custodes...

The way I understand how Martial Ka'tahs are used:

Pre Game, Pick your 3 Ka'tahs, label them Primary, Secondary and Tertiary.

Turn 1, Pick one of the two stances from your primary Ka'tah.

Turn 2, Pick the other stance from your Primary Ka'tah (if so then go to Turn 3a) OR go to your Secondary Ka'tah and pick one of those (if so then go to Turn 3b).

Turn 3a, Pick one of the two stances from your Secondary Ka'tah.
Turn 3b, Pick the other stance from your Secondary Ka'tah (if so then go to Turn 4a) OR go to your Tertiary Ka'tah and pick one of those.

Turn 4a, Pick one of the two stances from your Tertiary Ka'tah (if so then go to Turn 5).
Turn 4b, Pick the other stance from your Tertiary Ka'tah.

Turn 5, Pick the other stance from you Tertiary Ka'tah.

Note, You can get a minimum of 3 turns with Ka'tahs active if you only use one stance from each before moving onto the next or a maximum of 6 turns if you use both stances of each before moving onto the next.

Hope this helps someone.

You forgot to talk about our most important stratagem and it only cost 1cp!
1cp/2cp
“Oh wait, Hang on. I forgot…”
Pay 1 cp to repeat previous phase. Send 2cp to repeat last two phases.

15 minutes into this video and you've confirmed what I was worried about since the initial The Martial Ka'Tah rules are some insane rule bloat 😔
Something to work through for us dedicated Custodes players, but this is the sort of thing that would deter newcomers to the game.

So I have 7 armies and honestly can't keep up with the rules to play them correctly

Never a big fan of the Blade Champ model.. no were near enough gold armor for my taste.. looks more like a custodes scout to me.

Why don't GW include a 'simple' flow chart/diagram in the Codex to clearly explain the sequence of events...? They are not known for unambiguous language in sentence form...it will instantly confuse everyone and be incorrectly interpreted!

Sounds cool so far.

Can’t wait to read the second half of the codex when FW cares to release it 🤣

I think you hit the nail on the head with regards to complexity. I think dedicated Custodes player will get it right eventually, but it’s a bit of a nightmare for the other player. Especially if all codices end up being as complex.

Cheat sheet is a must.

And there I was thinking I have a lot of rules to remember for Drukhari ... What the hell are GW doing? ... 15 minutes in and my brain couldnt take anymore!

This sounds really fun like it’s going to take a bit of time getting just right but when you do it seems like it’s going to be kinda hard to consistently counter due on the face of it being kinda hard to understand (unnecessarily wordy AF ) without a slightly deeper dive into the codex then others.

Why do Prosecutors not get a Condemnor boltgun equivalent as standard...?!

It feels compilcated for the sake of being complicated. Just a poool of options, then choosing by ourselves (+ modificator for Hosts maybe) each turn would have been enough.

The stances could have been a basic rule to symbolize the variable fighting-style. Like -1 attack => +1 damage / -1 damage => +1 attack (change variables to balance it).

Or give them a pool of super-strategems. 12 or so, let us choose 6 + 1 for the host. They can be used once a game each and only effect a unit, but are fairly powerful.

Meh, just dreaming a bit here ;p.

Guess I’ll leave that can of gold spray paint to settle back down until the next balance slate then 🤨

This codex is a disaster, from the mechanics to the actual nerfing of the Custodians, I would not feel great if I owned one of those shiny $3, 500-4, 000 Custodes armies at the moment.

Can the blade champion (custodes hq infantry) receive captain Commander traits?

I'm a bit disappointed with this book overall. Its not all bad, the Shield Hosts are all cool, I like their traits and stuff. Ka'tahs are a bit more complicated than they really needed to be, but they're useful. Really I'm just disappointed with the fact that they did basically nothing to improve the "regular" Custodian Guard or the Wardens, and took away a lot of our best stratagems while also putting in the bear minimum effort with Praesidium Shields and the Sisters of Silence. Feels like they tried to make the overall rules cool and then got pretty lazy in the end with the datasheets and stratagems (most of them being ripped straight out of the marines codex is a tad insulting). Idk, I hope I'm wrong and they function as they should in practice, but at first glance this feels like a downgrade in a lot of ways.

I played 2nd, 3rd, 5th and a bit of 7th... I tried to come back for 9th. My Eldar are old and out of date, my GK are all metal and a bit rough so I thought I'd start a Custodes army. But after my first pass through the codex I think I'll pass. Too bad I already bought about 1500 points worth of minis which thankfully isn't a lot. 9th edition is just too bloated. GW is trying so hard to make a deeply strategic game that they're killing the enjoyment of playing a game.

Also, I think someone already pointed it out but the color schemes are tied to the Shield Host. Shadow Keepers are black, Solar are white, etc.
