This is why women are advised to wipe from front to back after using the toilet to prevent infection. An untreated UTI can spread to the kidneys, leading to more severe illness. Many people, especially sexually active women, pregnant women, and older women, are at an increased risk of contracting UTIs.
Why cranberries? To cause a urinary tract infection, bacteria must attach to the wall of the urinary bladder. Increasing fluid intake helps flush out bacteria before they can attach. Cranberries contain beneficial compounds like proanthocyanidins, which prevent bacteria from sticking to the bladder wall. Despite the availability of treatments, over 90% of the bacteria that cause urinary tract infections show some form of antibiotic resistance, making cranberry juice a valuable preventative measure.
