In this video, I talk about how bubble levels work, how to check them for proper operation, and how to recalibrate a level that has gotten out of whack.

'I never realized they could be adjusted. Thank you. I'll have to check mine. Thanks for sharing. Iowa is watching. Have a Merry Christmas and a great new year.

Great video! Since I took classes in surveying 35 years ago, I always check a level before I buy it - putting in on a quite horizontal surface and flip it 180°. I will say 1 out of 10 levels - even the high end levels - are a little of whack.

Being a mason laying lots of rough block over 40 years, I've probably had over 40 levels. In S. Fl. We use our levels more than just about any other region in the U.S. and the block are so rough it wears out the level. Stabilas are the best IMHO, but even those I have to check, and they still wear out. Also, of the vial can be adjusted, you can be sure it will go out, so don't use them unless you like to adjust your level. If you're not a mason, one good stabila should last a life time.

Unable to adjust my level as you showed. Although my window has the vial attached, when you snap it into place the body of the level locks the vial in place, even though the window can move around a bit. (Window moves but vial remains stationary.) I filed away the body so the vial can move with the window, but there's so much play in everything now when I try and tighten the screws it throws it off again. Time for a new level I guess. The ones I see in stores now don't have any visible screws holding the window/vial in place, do you know if you can "calibrate" these?

Excellent video. I have a level that in the "propeller" position checking plumb, I have to "propeller" the level every time because the bubble is off center to plumb. I will see if I can recalibrate it! Thanks for the lesson!
