A South Korean has been elected to lead UNESCO's cultural heritage evaluation body.
Bak Sang-mee , a professor at Seoul's Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, was unanimously elected to be chairwoman of the evaluation body in Paris on Thursday.
She will be the first Korean to hold the position.
During her term, which runs until December,… she will be tasked with ensuring intangible cultural heritage items are protected effectively.
Along with other two chairpersons, she will evaluate nominations to the Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists and proposals for the Register of Best Safeguarding Practices.
