I did this section when I first moved back to California in '02. I had been kayaking all over the SE at the time and I had a blast doing it. However, I wasn't able to find a solid group of paddlers in SoCal to hang with so I sold my boats. I had heard they were limiting access to the Kernville area this year due to the runoff so I'm surprised to see this.

Those are cool slides when the water is much lower.

The Kern River is seriously violent this year. Made a mess above the Isabella Lake dam, almost overtopped the dam itself, flooded farm land in the central valley, and now has opened cracks in the main road to Bakersfield.

A kayaker died last month on the upper kern. He was with a few friends and they tried to get to him but weren’t able to. His body still hasn’t been recovered. Stay safe if you’re going to play in the Kern.
