How to pronounce Ö in Finnish?! #shorts

Does pronouncing the Ö sound in Finnish give you some trouble? 😰 Here's a pronunciation tip to help you nail down this tricky letter! ☝🏻

The first vowel in the English word "circus" has the same ö sound as "mökki." Listen closely. 👂🏻

Remember that Ö and O have different sounds in Finnish. The Finnish O is always pronounced like the O sound in the English word "oak." 🌳

i've been learning it to surprise my grandfather on his birthday, and some of the pronunciations have me stumped so videos like this are super helpful. thank you.

it just occurred to me that this might sound weird without context. i grew up and live in the upper peninsula of Michigan, where there's still some Finnish speaking households. my grandparents happen to fall into that category.

Worth noting that in some parts of the world, English speakers rhoticize their 'r's. I am Canadian, and "circus" doesn't have the sound for me that you say in the video. For me, I think the closest sound I already know to what you're saying in the video is the french "eu" sound, as in "peux" (few), "deux" (two) or "bleu" (blue). Does that seem like a reasonable approximation?
