When to breed budgies?
- Budgies get mature at 6-7 months but some earlier especially males. you should wait for the female to be 1-2 years old so she can't get egg-bound or similar problems.

When to put the nest?
- After budgies come in extra condition by feeding you can set up the nest.

What to put in the nest?
- Budgies prefer a clean nest but you can try to put bigger pieces of sawdust, wood pellets, or oats.. if the budgie doesn't like it, she will eject materials.

Why is my budgie nibbling the nest?
- When you set up the nest, the female will after a few days start nibbling on the wood. she tests the nest to establish whether it is strong and safe enough for her. never open the nest while the female is inside.

The male entered the nest?
- Male budgies rarely enter the nest together with the female. it usually happens when he wants to feed her and make sure she is alright but some people say he wants to get sure the nest is ready.

I got a wooden nest that is very popular here in mexico, is basically a wide log piece with the ends covered with an aluminum plate, it's called "nido de quiote" and the first one to get interested was the male and he started carving on it (the logs have a very strong bark and a soft inside, the birds have to chew it all out to make their own nests, leaving only the bark with a thin layer of soft wood) and after 2 days he finally got the female to pay attention and then she started to carve as well! now they both take turns and I read somewhere that this helps a LOT to get the female into breeding condition. My male is 9 months old and the female is 18 months old.

Perfect timing! I've been researching a lot about breeding budgies because of recent events. I had three boys but while I was away on a trip (they had someone watching them ofc) two of my babies have left (passed away). And now I have a single male. I've been wanting to change things up a bit and get a female budgie to breed him with. I am a bit afraid that he's past the age of breeding (1-3 years) but he can't be much older than the age of breeding. So I'm going to try and find a rather young female and let them bond. I'll probably breed them at the beginning of next summer break if things go according to plan and I get her soon. That way, when the chicks need care the most, I'll be home with them. And once it comes time for me to continue school again, they'll be a lot more stable and independent. And of course, I'd get a much larger cage to house the chicks when they're old enough. I plan on taming them, of course.
