One thing to consider is the SOS button has no shield. It would be fairly easy to unknowingly set off a distress call if you carry it in your pack.

I have just gotten a Defy last week and tested it from inside of the old factory building where it woodshop is located and it rarely lost signal in there and was even able to relocate the satellite when I powered it off and on while I was in there. I took it on a backpacking trip this weekend and it performed perfectly. I normally can't get a signal, so when I'm solo I had no life before now, but I was able to communicate with my wife easily. I think the fact that it uses geostationary satellite is a big plus when it comes to maintaining connectivity.

This is a great idea for less than 1/2 the price of an InReach.
Thanks, Dave. Appreciate your lessons and reviews from NZ.

I love that Dave is not only able to find a meal and start a fire like Otzi, but that he's not afraid to embrace technology that is actually useful in the outdoors.

I like how you get straight to the point---and I can't stand "unboxing" videos.
They're usually just "here's a box, here's what's in it but I have no idea if it works."

The S.O.S. option would be very valuable if a person's outing was to go bad for any reason. The Call-In option seems like it would be awesome as well. Cool product Dave!!! Thanks for looking out for us by researching and sharing this product and information with us.

I feel like the failure here is that it required the recipient to install the app. If they're already sending a message, just relay the original message.

one interesting thing about this system is that its satellites are geostationary and 22, 300 miles above the earth. as opposed to LEO satellites and hopefully avoid close earth proximity disruptions

Very cool, Cost is diffently a plus. I have the Inreach explorer, one of my favorite pieces of kit. You can use it to communicate with other teammates out in the field, who are also equipped. The mapping aspect I find useful when covering large areas off road. It is usually combined with an additional gps program. Practical gear. Thanks for sharing.

Great lifesaver for mountain trekking. Dave Paulides would love to have one of these to show off on his Missing 411 YouTube channel.

Cool! Neat to see some new products for outdoor communication. I have a Zoleo which does the same thing.
