We are going to look at the diary of German Soldier, who was a German lieutenant in the 185th Infantry Regiment of the 87th Infantry Division of the Wehrmacht. What concerns his biographical data, we know about him only the information that he indicated in his diary. One can see that he was young, well-educated and had his own ideas concerning the essence of military service. Linke was an admirer of drill, of rigid military order - this is evident, but he also gave great importance to military brotherhood. He was certainly a brave man (as he received two iron crosses for his battles on the Eastern Front), and he also took the hardships of front-line life rather easily.

These dairy readings provide a graphic account of history. They are chilling in more ways than one. Thanks for posting them.

The hardships endured by both armies and civilians on the Eastern front are honestly unfathomable.

I've had insomnia issues my whole life. I been on OTC meds, narcotics, herbs..to help and I'm finding listening to these is working more than anything. Not to say these are boring but the opposite. I think I'm so into the amazing first hand stories, it's stopping all those racing thoughts.
Thank you for these. I literally lose my shit when a commercial comes on. God do I hate hate those commercials, it's like you can't even wait them out cause some if you don't skip will play for minutes.

Thank you

Imagine if this guy knew that 80 yrs later there will be some world wide network, and hundreds of thousands will see what he wrote.

Living in North Dakota and have been outside in -60degree f for just a few minutes. Absolutely miserable.
I feel for each and every person and animal that had to endure survival yet alone fighting each day in that type of cold for several winters.😞

I've spent a few nights in the snow encamped in the Colorado mountains in below zero temperatures, but these men have spent weeks and months in these conditions with poor food and no way to get warm. No matter your allegiance these men were tough and they suffered greatly - it's a tragedy all around

that old myth that the USSR would have lost the war if Germany took Moscow. Napoleon thought the same thing. Stalin had already started moving his factories east and they would have fought on, probably making Moscow the first Stalingrad

All these diaries are really interesting. To add to the historical fact: being of Austrian decent, all of my ancestors fought on the Axis side during WW2. My grandfather, a serving Wehrmacht Captain was killed in Russia in December 1942. Another relative - his nephew - a regular soldier in the Wehrmacht was also in Russia until the last days of the war. With his unit disintegrated he was trying to make his way back home to Austria, effectively on foot, when he was picked up by an SS unit and immediately integrated - presumably on threat of being shot for desertion even though the war was effectively over. Within hours, the SS unit itself was captured by advancing Russian troops who shot all the prisoners for being SS. Including my relative who was press-ganged into the unit just hours before. He was 18 years old.

Wonderful content!! One thing that it is often overlooked (and your photos depict) is the use of horses and mules by Germany (3.5 million dead animals in WW2). All of their propaganda films show tanks and trucks but, in reality, they were only about 20% mechanized. This made horrible supply issues even worse because roughly 50-60% of deliveries received were fodder for the animals that were crucial to their movements and survival. Add in fuel, ammo, spare parts, etc., and that doesn't leave much space for food.

Listening to these diaries is fascinating! I'm finding myself listening to them over and over. To bad there aren't many more as it really puts you in their shoes.

I have heard so many theories ehy the Germans lost the war from lack of oil to Hitler sending Guderian to help with Kiev instead of trying for Moscow. My opinion has always been that the loss sits mostly at Goering's feet not Hitler's. The German blitzkrieg seemed so effective in Poland, France and in 1941 Soviet Union because of the Luftwaffe. The tip of the spear of the Wehrmacht always had lots of air to ground support from the Stukas whenever they were successful. They give the 88 so much credit for defeating the superior Russian tanks. I have to point out that Guderian wasn't hauling 88s with him when he was charging ahead. He had mostle Panzer 2s and 3s which couldn't take out a T34 let alone a KV unless you dropped it onto one from a plane. So how were they able to defeat so many superior tanks? It was the Luftwaffe and they were a huge reason for the blitzkrieg success. Unfortunately, Goering wasn't able to write a memoir after the war like Manstein. So there wasn't a cheerleader telling the heroic tales of the Luftwaffe after the war. The only stories we hear about them is how they were not able to defeat Malta and peotect Rommel's supply lines. How they made a huge mistake bombing Stalingrad into rubble giving the Soviets perfect defensive positions. How they failed at the Battle of Britain and failed to supply Paulus at Stalingrad how they failed to protect German cities from allied raids. How they failed to protect Romanian and Hungarian oil fields causing an even greater oil shortage for the Reich. That's all you ever hear about the Luftwaffe is failure after failure. The problem was the Luftwaffe had poor leadership until Germany had already pretty much lot the war. Had someone with much better administration skills that understood how important an air force was going to be in the coming war been put in charge they would have at the very least started the war with a Luftwaffe twice the size Germany had. Look at when the Germans really started losing the war in the east, late 1942. Before Uranus even began Hitler transferred over half of the Luftwaffe that was stationed on the Eastern front. He had to protect Germany and Rommel was losing all of his supplies. I firmly believe Uranus would have been stopped and the 6th army never would have been encircled and trapped had Hitler not decimated their Luftwaffe support. Uranus was the first battle the Soviets had air superiority and they never gave it up. Kursk was such a disaster for the Germans because they could not get air superiority. The Germans were never able to get it back and when the Soviets finally had an air force that was just as skilled as the Germans were in 1941 they rolled up the Germans battle after battle. It wasn't until the allies had firmly secured air superiority over all of Europe that they attempted landing in Normandy. German generals cam blame Hitler and economists can blame their lack of oil. In reality the real reason Germany lost that war was their lack of understanding how important having air superiority would be in 1939.
The main reason their infantry divisions didnt do better was their unit battle philosophy. Each German squad was built to support the MG. That really wasn't a very good plan for attacking. Had Hitler not been so farsighted with the STG. Its possible most of his soldiers would have gone into Barbarossa carrying the world's first assault rifle and they definitely would have gotten a victory in Stalingrad had every soldier had a STG. The Soviets barely had enough bolt action rifles to arm themselves. Using them against assault rifles in urban combat would have been disastrous for the Soviets.

History tells us that a city captured, even a capital city will not win a war, Napoleon found out the hard way that the Russians were prepared to trade distance for time, time to remove entire factorys beyond the reach of the short ranged German bombers, time to mobilize millions of men. Hitler lost the Russian campaign before it even started because he failed to subdue Britain, forcing the Germans to fight a multiple front war, Hitler gambled on a quick war and lost when the Russians fell back and waged scorch earth tactics that bleed the German army of men, equipment and supplies.

A most excellent narration and compilation of pictures. Someone certainly knows what he is doing thank you! What a wonderful way to begin to understand what those soldiers went through. The few pictures in the books of my youth were never this good.
