Coturnix quail are a hidden gem. They're eggs and meat are packed with nutrients and protein. Quail also lay an average of 300 eggs a year and eat less than chickens.

My father was a world-class champion canary breeder and kept about a dozen Chinese Painted Quail on the floor of his (large) aviary.
There was a constant supply of eggs, which I used to hard boil, (it only takes a minute) and pickle in aspic jelly.
Quail's eggs in aspic are something of a gourmet delicacy...but my friends and I used to eat them most days at school!

Excellent introductory video! we love our quail. We now have about 50. About 10 or near the point of harvesting. We just recently got into it this year. They have started to molt and egg production is down to a trickle. However, they laid strong all summer long.
