This video made me feel like I was back in high school researching MMOs on old YouTube,
such a good nostalgic but not even trying to be a troll

By far one of the best, concise and definitive reviews/explanations.

Trying to describe old school SWG, especially Pre-CU, to a newer MMORPG player that wasn't around for the old school games of the genre is an amusing time. How MMORPGs used to be with SWG and before are nothing at all like how later ones did things. Even World of Warcraft was a big departure.

Something a lot can't wrap their heads around was that SWG had item decay. Your stuff will break eventually whereas later games your gear lasts forever. We had a vibrant crafting and player run economy because players needed replacement gear and crafters competed with each other to provide those goods. Stuff was very reasonably priced, especially for gear you just need for day-to-day work. If you had rare mats for fancy gear, you can talk the price down.
It was the only MMORPG I have ever played where adventuring players would argue about who the best armorsmith, weaponsmith, etc. were on the server. Hell, even crafted gear you acquired had a spot to identify who crafted the item. We argued because gear didn't have the same stats, so certain crafters got the stuff right because of skill, quality of mats / crafting tools / experimentation / etc. Then there was pricing.

This sort of stuff no longer flies in modern MMORPGs.

The immersion of the game was what made me fall in love with pre-CU SWG. To this day only game I felt like I was in real universe, free to explore and free to do whatever I wanted to do. And as complex as all professions seemed, it was always fun choosing what your character would be.

The sky is the limit with swgemu because there's no jump to light speed....

Waiting on my Star Wars Galaxy copy- but glad to see this video to help with server choosing.

I’ll go with your recommendation to try out one of the original system prior to the changes, and then go from there.

I would recommend playing multiple servers. I've played several from SWGemu to SWG Legends and all have their pros and cons.

If you are really into multi-class group pvp, Legends is probably best. Tons of original content, plus cloud city. I bit too much content for my tastes.

SWG Beyond is a good alternative to Legends. Small community that is pvp focused. It does have some original content, but not so much that it feels overwhelming to the casual player.

Currently, my favorite is Restoration. It has decent pvp and is very rp friendly. Both the pvp and rp communities seem to get along with each other. It has Jump to Lightspeed, Kash, and Mustafar. Great Community. Closest thing you can get to the CU, but with a lot of the NGE content. There is original content, but again not so much that it feels overwhelming. They recently added two of the NGE heroics.

SWG Evolve is kind of interesting (think of like NGE with hybrid classes). It has base classes, similar to pre-CU/CU, but advance classes are the NGE versions. There is a decent community there, but if you don't get into a guild, you are likely not to see that community. Mos Eisley is usually dead and it is near impossible for the lone wolf to find people to group content, such as heroics.

The testing for a jump to lightspeed is on the Nova server which is the oldest actual server of the emu project

Thank you for this video, it really helped me when figuring out what to play. I liked EiF but was super bummed when most of the races had 0 customization. Kinda killed it for me. So now it's between legends and restoration. Which would you choose and why?

Population is a big issue with the ones I played: Legends, Restoration 3, Empire in Flames, Emu. Legends had by far the largest, most active player base. Restoration 3 had a few guys namely in the hubs. But you'll find some on the more popular planets. Empire in Flames? I really liked what the server was trying to do. It's very different from the official game. But population is dead. I remember trying to shop for Stormtrooper Armor. None was on the exchange nor browsing through player shops. I was told I had to get on Discord and put out a request for it, which nobody answered.
Emu is fine gameplay wise, it is Pre-CU after all. But population is a sore issue. It's not dead like Empire in Flames but it is on the low side when I was there.

Low population is a major problem because SWG at its heart, was an old school MMORPG. Back when games of that genre were built with players depending on each other. Characters were never truly self sufficient like in later MMORPGs, so you needed other players. The player population can be so bad that you can't even find Doctor Buffs sometimes, which is crippling for Pre-NGE gameplay. Restoration 3 did have bots giving Doc Buffs in some of the cantinas, i.e. Mos Eisley.

I'm not fond of NGE, but Legends has the liveliest server with a bunch of people running around. None of the others I've tried come anywhere close.

Not having JTL space expansion is a huge detriment, IMO. I think it was the best or among the best parts of SWG. It was also the part of the game that was changed the least when the game had the CU & NGE updates. Legends and Restoration 3 had JTL. Emu does not. I mean... SOE got crucified on SWG's reviews when the game launched because it had no space game. Even SWG's successor, SWTOR, had no space game when it first released. Both games got a black eye for not having it at launch.

As much as I love SWGEmu, I think I might have grandkids by the time they restore Jump to Lightspeed lol. I was playing SWGEmu in 2009 and hearing about them making progress on Jump to Lightspeed even back then

problem is some of these servers require the orginal disks which is getting harder to come by that is why i went to resto in the first place

SWGLegends JtLS is one of the best flight sims available. I think only Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen do it better. The main differences are you can create your own equipment and fly iconic Star Wars ships in SWGLegends. AND, it has the Falcon, which you can decorate the inside of, and if you are really good you can acquire the Falcon as a planet home... C'mon?!
