These microorganisms provide key functions including digestion and fermentation of non-digestible polysaccharides and proteins, modification of bile salts, vitamin synthesis, immune function stimulation, and prevention of colonization by externally introduced microorganisms. But, in most cases, the complex influences of the microbiome on our health are not yet functionally understood.
