This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Schooling behavior among fish and birds; efficient computer networks; biofilms; cooperation in an ant colony; unmanaged development in cities; a common thread runs through all of these. Each is best described as a complex system. A complex system is not complicated. Each actor, or "agent," in the system behaves according to a few simple rules. Even though no agent understands the system writ large, undeniable patterns emerge from the system. As we learn to describe this emergence mathematically, in terms of entropy, stability, and far-from-equilibrium dynamics, we will better understand systems like markets, ecologies, and life itself.

Graham is about to complete an M.S. in Computer Science. His focus has been
complex systems and ecological modeling. Graham has worked in various technology fields, including speech recognition, systems integration, app development, machine learning, statistical analysis, project management, linguistics, and IT management. He plans pursue his interest in complexity and its applications to language technologies.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

This is a really excellent talk with 'down to earth' concepts that most people don't yet seem interested in, yet are fascinating to those of us who know we are more than what we have shown so far.

One of the best examples of applying science to practical domains that I have see thus far. Thanks for sharing, I hope the ideas present here spread quickly and effectively.
