Hurricane Ida lashed Cuba with high winds and heavy rain, and the storm is now moving toward Louisiana. Officials fear the warmer waters in the Gulf of Mexico could strengthen the storm to a Category 4. NBC’s Morgan Chesky reports for Weekend TODAY in New Orleans, and NBC Washington’s Somara Theodore is tracking the system’s path.

Louisiana native here. I left Louisiana 2 weeks before Katrina. Best decision I ever made! Louisiana is the armpit of the nation and mother nature keeps trying to tell them people to get out of that state and they don't listen! But no in all seriousness I hope people get out of the way of that storm. I have family there and just like a lot of the other louisianaians, they're stubborn and won't leave! Thoughts and prayers to everyone!

Hurricane Survival Tip #34
During and after a hurricane you have about a 50% chance of not having cell phone service. Getting a few cheap 2-way radios and passing them out to a couple of your nearest neighbors ( with instructions to keep it on and set to a specific channel ) can assure you a form of communication should you need it.

Hurricane Survival Tip #72
While preparing for a storm, fill your bathtubs up with water so you can still fill the toilet tank and flush in the event of water loss.
