The Filthy Hygiene of Mongols

Показать описание
Within the heart of the vast, untamed Eurasian steppe, there existed a paradox, a tale often obscured by the tales of their unparalleled military conquests. The Mongols, fierce warriors and skilled horsemen, reigned over the largest land empire in human history, yet were equally renowned for their less than palatable hygiene practices. Unravel with us, a gritty saga of grime and survival, as we delve deep into the dirty truths about the Mongol's hygiene – a crude spectacle of filth, odors, and resilience that forged an empire.

I am not sure if the primary source is reliable. I am a Mongolian adult, and I have never heard of dragon god. Our main religion was Tengriism, which meant we respected nature and believed in the power of the eternal blue sky. I was never taught or made aware of any Dragon God or whatever, not by school and nor by tradition. I was even taught that Mongolians were much more hygienic compared to Europeans at the time as we had vast land and lived nomadic lifestyle so we never had any sewage issues whereas the Europeans at the time were getting sick from all their hygienic issues and lack of proper sewage system in an enclosed area such as castle. I don’t know which source to trust, but it just frustrates me to see all these western sources stating controversial things as facts. Another common myth is how so many people are related to Genghis Khan…when his body is still not recovered till this day…You can say people are related to Mongolians but saying people are related to Genghis Khan is utterly ridiculous.

I am Mongolian and I grew up in countryside and we bathed every week! Every family has extra yurt and yes we stand up inside small bucket start washing from head to toe! Also we wash our clothes, garments! Not outside clothes (Deel) it’s usually made from animal skin! Okay why is everyone thinks Mongolian people don’t bathe or wash their clothes? We do wash and bathe but not in River or lake! Nobody shouldn’t wash their clothes in rivers or lakes because everyone drinks water animals and humans!Obvious isn’t it?

This video is littered with false information from beginning to end:
First of all Gobi doesn't mean arid as it's literal translation means desert. Secondly you mentioned that they don’t carry a change of clothes, plain incorrect, as we had corresponding garment for each seasons, such as “Tergel/Тэргэл” suited for the summer heat, “Deel/Дээл” which is suited for chillier weather in autumn and spring and “huvuntei/ dotortoi deel” suited for winter. Thirdly it wasn’t a crime to wash our clothes or to take a bath even in the old writings, simply it was that you couldn’t wash your clothes in a large body of water: lakes, rivers etc. To prevent contaminating the water, there were no laws prohibiting you from taking out the water and using it on land. And stop it with random dragon gods or sucking blood shiz those are plain and simply untrue. You should check your facts before making a slanderous video like this. I should know I’m a Mongolian btw

Actually, you aren’t allowed to wash your clothes in rivers or any other natural source of water. Rather you are to carry the water from that river and wash it in a bucket. In order not to contaminate the natural water sources. It’s a misinterpretation that the video did on its part; the dragon or big fish was real.

I've heard these claims about the Mongls before but it's really hard to believe that they didnt bathe occasionally, like when trying to make babies. When I was with the Marines I once went almost a month without bathing and man, oh man, did I stink. I can only imagine how much worse I would smell after a few months.
I think a lot of this is just negative things people said about them because of how brutal they were. Horses need a ton of water everyday an they had tons of horses. And didnt a queen of Spain once claim to have only bathed twice? The day she was born and her wedding night?
Mongls also conquered China, and the Chinese were known for washing and using toilet paper and perfumes a silks. Silk doesnt last too long when worn too much. A lot of this sounds like other cultures bashing them for, well, being Mongol

Just wanna clarify that the Gobi desert is the 4th largest desert in the world not the 6th. Just if anyone was wondering.

The Mongols conquered China at around the same time they swept across Europe. They ruled China for around120 years. During their reign, they changed the monetary system of China. Instead of using money made with real metal, they forced China people to use paper money, pretty much the same as what we use today.

Washing your clothes was not forbidden. Washing your clothes or body in the river during the spring and summer time was forbidden due to the impact on ecology. You could wash yourself or clothes at a different place. Just not in the river.

I stopped watching this video after they made the statement.

13:42 one thing that offends me from this video is he saying " Mongols having horrible taste in food". how is meat and sausages Horrible food???. mongols also ate aruul and airag and other dairy products, they also ate fruits and wild greens.
i think your basing all this Mongolian diet information on a single or small number of sources.
i don't think its a good idea to judge Nomads that are always moving. they are just too different lifestyle than just living in one place and never move. its hard to accumulate knowledge and resource when your a Nomad.

Mongols were suprememly organized steppe people. Their hygeine customs were linked to their resources though. The idea that a group of people could conquer practically half of asia and europe but ignored hygeine is ridiculously laughable. How would these dirty people, living amongst eachother and animals, have the strength to conquer anything? You do know disease tends to spread where hygeine is lacking?
