Music History: Patti Smith, born on December 30, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, is an iconic American singer, songwriter, poet, and visual artist who became a highly influential figure in the New York City punk rock movement with her 1975 debut album "Horses."

Patricia Lee Smith was born to Beverly Smith, a jazz singer-turned-waitress, and Grant Smith, a machinist at a Honeywell plant. Her family moved to Philadelphia when she was very young, and later to Woodbury, New Jersey.
Patti was raised in a working-class family and developed a passion for literature and music at a young age. She was inspired by the works of Arthur Rimbaud, William Blake, and the Beats.
Education: She attended Deptford Township High School in New Jersey and briefly attended Glassboro State College (now Rowan University), where she studied to become a teacher. However, she left college in 1967 and moved to New York City.
Upon arriving in New York City, Smith faced poverty and worked in various bookstores. She lived with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, with whom she formed a deeply influential and supportive relationship.
In New York, Smith immersed herself in the art scene, engaging in performance art, poetry readings, and visual arts. Her early poems and drawings gained some attention in the underground scene.
Smith and Mapplethorpe lived at the Chelsea Hotel, a legendary haven for artists, musicians, and writers, which further fueled her creative endeavors.
In 1974, Smith formed the Patti Smith Group with guitarist Lenny Kaye. They were later joined by Richard Sohl (piano), Ivan Král (bass), and Jay Dee Daugherty (drums). This collaboration marked the beginning of her transition from poetry to rock music.
Produced by John Cale, "Horses" is considered one of the greatest and most influential albums of all time. It combined punk rock with spoken word poetry, establishing Smith as a revolutionary figure in rock music. The album featured iconic tracks like "Gloria" and "Land."

Patti Smith is often referred to as the "punk poet laureate" and is known for her energetic and raw performances. She became a crucial figure in the development of punk rock, influencing countless musicians and artists.
