Geothermal energy: the only 24/7 renewable and why it's poised for massive growth

Geothermal energy is the only renewable without intermittencies and which is tunable to any load. It is a perfect complement to solar and wind. Countries such as Germany, which are heavy in those sectors, would do well to double down on geothermal, much as they did for solar and changed the economics of that sector forever. Lightning could strike again*. Geothermal is also an ideal portfolio item for oil and gas companies because the competencies required are exactly the same as for oil and gas.

Great discussion on a topic that needs more exposure to not only the public but policy makers as well. Let’s hope they are listening.

Great program, Vik & Justin. Learned a lot. You focused on oil companies taking on the challenge of producing energy from geothermal sources. Question: Can Oil Field Service (OFS) Companies move up the food chain and become successful owners/operators of geothermal assets? What would help an OFS firm to successfully take on this new role and what are the hurdles they would have to overcome?

After the hot water is used to make electricity could it then be used for grid heating before being pumped back into the ground?

Geothermal is a form of natural nuclear energy. No need to drill deep wells, just do nuclear at a power plant.
