This demonstrates perfectly, the principle of hopper cooled engines, known about for well over a century. The engine temperature cannot exceed that of boiling water, and provided that the hopper is regularly monitored and kept full as the water evaporates, the engine will run indefinitely, as long as fuel and lubrication is properly maintained.

When I was 11 we made little paper containers to boil water in our science lessons. We also made and calibrated thermometers using glass tubes filled with oil. Can’t believe so many people here haven’t even see their experiment never mind done it themselves. We had great physics teachers in the 1970s.

This is actually extremely useful in survival situations. If all you have are plastic water bottles, you can safely boil water in them -- just make sure the only parts of the cup that are near the flame contain water.

I realized this by putting a water bottle into a campfire as a young boy scout. I got a badge for "finding a way to clean water in a survival situation" all on accident 😂

A good tip for would-be scientists: don't try this with most disposable plastic cups, because as the water heats up, the plastic will return back into a small sheet, spilling hot water everywhere
