I Switched to Apple 2 Weeks Ago (After a LIFETIME on Windows)... Here's How It's Going

I bought my very first Apple computer 2 weeks ago (the M3 MacBook Pro) and have completely switched over from Windows. In this video, I want to share how it's going, what I like, what I don't, and whether or not I'm going to stick around in the Apple ecosystem.

After 30 years of using Windows it's been quite the transition, but I've always been so curious about why people love Apple products so much. With the release of the new M3 chips my curiosity got the best of me so here I am, 2 weeks in with the latest and greatest MacBook ever... let's talk about it!

In case you are curious this is the laptop I bought:

The above is an affiliate link incase you decide to pick one up though I suggest bumping up the ram to 36.

For Photos/files preview on Mac via Finder, you can just select a file (without opening) and hit the space bar. This brings up an instant preview and you can cycle between ALL files in there that support a preview (usually photos, videos, audio, text files, documents, etc, even PSD, AI, and INDD files). Any folders or other kinds of project files will not show a preview but a simplified, stripped info box.

For the clock, you can of course reposition everything, including the top bar, but what you could also do is just add a clock widget to the screen and put it in the lower right corner. Not the same, but at least you will see the clock when you look for it down right.
As some already commented, you will get the full benefit once you have more than Mac. Go for an iPhone and Watch to start with. Once you experience the seamlessness of the ecosystem, you will not want to go back :)

I bought the base m1 air on launch and I'm using it since then about 12 hours a day. Yes, it needs a bit of time to learn the basics, but one you got it, it's just "disappears". I mean when I need to do something I just open the laptop, when I finished I just close it. The OS somehow clicks with me, I can focus on my work, editing my family videos, record some sick guitar tunes or just browse the web. Never gonna look back and I say it that I used windows from 3.1 to 10 every day for years.

"you just tap ctrl+space"

It's Cmd+Space, my man. Let the clutches of Windows release you!

Your kid is in gymnastics! That’s awesome! Love the Mac environment and your “dirty talk” lol. Nice video!

The deal here is that Apple created the GUI before Microsoft so, the later boys added a few user friendly ideas but bottom line is that they both can’t copy each other too much, it’s like comparing a Honda and a Ford, things are in different places but in the end you can drive both. The more you use Apple devices the better your experience will be. To give you an idea, think back to when you first used a Windows computer, I am sure it took time to figure things out too. Have fun my friend.

Command space (not control space) for Spotlight. To arrow through pictures (that is, other than within your Photos Library which does support arrow keys) select View/Show Preview. There is a way to do most common tasks on either macOS or Windows.

press space while on a picture of file, then you can use the arrow keys

Excellent video - Been a Heavy Windows user since Win 3.1 - but as you I bought my first Mac (Macbook Pro 36GB ram) a few weeks ago. It is not that hard to get used to - stil I work more effective on a PC - but that will probably change soon. And battery life - oh yes - that is one of the main reasons for the switch. When windows can run on the new arm processes it will be interesting to see the difference.
About the price: My Old laptop was a 15" Dell XPS. More or less same build quality - and price level. So the expensive Mac's has to be compared with something as a Dell XPS equvilant.

I switched from windows after getting a new macbook pro 13 inch from 2022. I like it asides from the touch bar. I haven't had a laptop quieter than this one. No fan spinning whatsoever or heating. I wouldn't mind the touch bar if I could control volume up and down through the keyboard.

To start fresh just open a second desktop, multiple desktops means you can swipe between different projects etc all on their own desktop.

Good review, I was a Windows NT Server administrator for IBM Global Services from 1996 -1998, and bought a Mac Centris 650 at a LSI Logic employee sale that they had for the computers we replaced with Windows 95 on Compaq desktop's. Since then I have always ran both Mac's and Windows PC's at home, and now dual boot with Windows 10 and Mac OS X on a Intel CPU Mac Book Pro and a 2012 12 core Mac Pro desktop.

I remember laying on the garage floor with DOS and a learn Spanish floppy. One keyboard tip, unless you use Caps Lock go into Settings and change it to a Command key. Much more ergonomic using your pinky and thumb or other fingers for cut, copy, paste, quit, and close.

Great video. I've been using DOS/Windows since 1984 (got you beat there) and have spent nearly a year switching back and forth between Windows and MacOS. I had all the other ecosystem pieces (iPhone since 2007, iPad and Watch since 2015) and now I'm now squarely in the Mac camp with a MacBook Pro 14. Since you've already tasted the MacBook/iPad integration, you'll love the iPhone addition for a unified phot library, iMessage, FaceTime, and most any iPad app on your Mac.

You should consider the M1 Max option you mentioned. No raytracing (if gaming is your ultimate goal) but the price savings are as staggering as the performance. Apple went all out to crush Intel with the M1 series of chips, and the M2/M3 cycles, while more powerful, are NOT maps in performance. I was able to pick up a third party M1 Max MBP 14 (32gb/2tb/24gpu core) unit with annually renewable Applecare+ for $1750. It is way beyond what I need for my business practice and the performance/battery life runs circles around my Surface Pro 8.

1. Safari won't let you playback smoothly at more than 2x which is so weird
2. You can have PWA to Chrome, also with extension support unlike safari which strips away extension support if you dock it like having ads or what not.

As a MS Edge browser user, Windows can create apps for specific websites. I use it for the 49er's football website and Crunchyroll.

The first thing that really convicne its a great decision was the fact that I can use it UNPLUGGED for hours. I mean you can use windows unplugged but 1) brightness automaticall changes 2) it slows down and 3) the battery only lasted an hour or lower depending on the tasks.
