In 1907, a physician named Duncan MacDougall conducted a controversial experiment attempting to measure the weight of the human soul. He hypothesized that the soul has physical mass and that this mass would be detectable as a loss of weight at the precise moment of death.
MacDougall's experiment involved weighing six dying patients on a specially designed bed scale. To his surprise, one of the subjects lost exactly 21.3 grams (about 3/4 of an ounce) at the moment of death. MacDougall concluded this was the weight of the soul departing the body.
