Ken Welch, a professor at the Division of Nanotechnology and Functional materials at the Ångström Laboratory, Uppsala University is leading a project where academics and industry partners jointly are developing a microsensor to localize and identify sources of chronic pain. The benefit the project will bring about is the development of a medical device available to clinicians that will aid them in locating and diagnosing chronic musculoskeletal pain, which is difficult or impossible to do today. The team has developed a prototype sensor and has ethical approval for a clinical study of the prototype. In 2020 they received funding from the Vinnova-financed innovation program SweLife and Medtech4Health that will allow them to continue the development of this medical device into clinical trials.
