My brother brought a wonderful spiral bone-in ham for our family Christmas brunch and no one wanted the bone, so I brought it home. I cooked 1 1/2 pounds of navy beans with it, and it was so good. I froze the extra today. I will get eleven meals out of it for about $2 worth of beans.

That's the most American video I've ever watched LOL I'm Italian born and raised, and we always cook from scratch, we rarely go out for dinner and even more rarely grab take away, but our kitchens are not so full of food like I've seen while living in the US. We just go grocery shopping more often

Sugar offers a lot of calories in an emergency situation, and can help with shock. But you dont NEED it, you can just as well use dried fruit, even to feed yeast. Talking about dried fruit, you can easily make it without heat as long as you dont live in a damp place. Recepy: on a dry sunny day, cut out the core, slice apples in thin rings, dunk these for a few seconds into salted water, then pull a Cotton string or a clean wooden stick through the hole. Hang (like a clotheline) to dry in a well aired warm place. (I just used my half open window, others prefer to suspend them over their hearth. When they are sufficently dried, store them in a tight lid container.

Jars of dried chip beef, shelf stable milk in cartons tastes better than powdered milk. YES on the peanut butter!

I couldn't agree more, having a long term food pantry is so crucial, especially in this day and age. I must remember to add yeast and baking soda to my stockpile, thank you :)

When my grandma didn't have sugar to put in breads or cakes she used apple sauce, honey, syrup she used what she had. And if nothing to put on the cake or bread she used butter as a spread🤗

Great list. This is the basic kind of list I've been looking for. Thank you!

I beg to differ with you on the bread. I’ve been baking my own bread for several years and I’ve never used sugar. Flour, yeast, salt, and water is all that is needed for plain bread. I often add garlic powder or minced onions to give it different flavors. If I crave a sweeter bread I add honey. My breads are always yummy without sugar.
I grew up in a communist country, food was rationed. My grandmother used to boil pasta and then fry it with scrambled eggs and spices. In case we couldn’t get potatoes or sauce for the pasta. Meat was always severely rationed.

I make my own milk it’s so cheap. Oats in the blender with water, maybe a little sweetener like agave then strained through a nut milk bag 🌱

I always have coconut aminos, rice and soba/udon/ramen noodles plus frozen veg. I make a lot of Asian inspired foods. I was always scared of messing up yeast in bread so I started with a chapati flatbread that only takes flour water and salt, rolled out really thin then put in the hot skillet for a minute on each side. It’s so good

I have a juicer with a nut butter attachment so I make my own but butters too!! Love it!! and I give my doggo peanut butter so I’m happy knowing she’s not getting all those preservatives

Flour+yeast=you have your own yeast to keep into the fridge for ages.. Mine is made by mixing the two together with the water I left raisins to soak in. Then left to grow in a warm place. Then I repeated once more and It was ready to use. Of course a tiny bit of sugar helps 🌹

Whole milk is about 1.83 a gallon at Gastonia NC aldi. I pick up 6 at a time, stash a couple away in fridge, and pressure can the rest. Easy process and stocks my pantry

I learned to make homemade yeast, a long time ago! So easy. I think it was an old Martha Stewart episode... look it up on YouTube!
