Building the Perfect Ghost Type Gym Leader

Gym Leaders are supposed to be some of the best trainers in the Pokémon world. Sometimes that's true! Only sometimes... The truth is that many gym leaders fail to impress Pokémon fans in performance, and in team. To show you what we're missing out on, today I'm continuing my series where I build a "perfect" gym leader for every type in the game! A team that's not only challenging, but one that represents the type better than their in-game teams could ever hope to.

Also... BOO!

Spooky, huh?

After you finish this series, you should make a single trainer team that could beat all these gyms you’ve built

my ghost gym would be a haunted library that challengers could only enter at night. the team would be Froslass to make a chilling atmosphere the moment challengers enter, Chandelure provides an eerie reading light, Sableye to play pranks from the darkness, Mismagius shelves the books while singing ominously, Mimikyu in charge of the toys in the kids reading area, and Decidueye the librarian with owl nightvision watching the challengers' every move... only the bravest challengers can reach the gym leader

As a ghost type trainer, and someone who wants a ghost type evil team I appreciate this

Ghost types have always been my favorite, going back to Gen1!
I designed a gym once around gen 7
Theme: Theatre
Intro: Gym is only open to those who have tickets, but they are sold-out. A man says he has an extra ticket the player can have, if you help him find them. (They are hidden in a nearby trashcan) The two enter the building and are surrounded by a crowd. They all talk about the show they are waiting for, information for the stage-hand quiz can be found by talking to them.
Lead Up: There are three sets of doors, leading left, right, and up. Each door leads to a different stage where a different play is to be put on. Each stage is originally blocked by a stage-hand. If you can answer his questions about the play, he will let you pass. If you fail, he will challenge you to a battle. The Stage hand will have one Pokémon, the named one from the show. After passing the stage hand you will meet the “Gym Leader” on the stage. The “Gym Leader” will battle you with a Shuppet and the Pokémon named in the show. After defeating him, the “Gym Leader” will reveal that he is just an actor and that the real leader battles on another stage.
Green Stage: Phantump of the Opera
Blue Stage: Quakefear’s Golette
Purple Stage: Fall of the House of Haunter
Final Battle: After defeating the three fake leaders, Ticket man appears and tells the player he found a fourth, secret stage where the true leader battles. Brining the player to the center lobby, the Pokeball symbol in the center lifts with stairs leading up to it and lights up. The crowd’s attention turns to the new stage and Ticket man reveals himself as the true leader. Pokémon: Trevenant, Golurk, Gengar, Banette, and Mimikyu.
Post Battle: After winning Leader will thank Player for the performance and award the player with the Drama Badge and a signature ghost move.

Can't wait to add all these to the GAUNTLET game because I love the Ghost type.

I like how the team is strong but not impossible to defeat. For example, dusclops is an incredibly strong and annoying pokemon, but if you think about it and learn your (hypothetical) losses, you can use a Pokemon with taunt to completely wall it if it’s a normal type with taunt. I wish actual games would create gym leaders like this that would teach Pokemon battling is more than just using super effective attacks every turn

Alright, this is the one I’ve been waiting for. I mentioned this in previous episodes, but I’ll say again that I am a ghost type specialist.

The best way I’ve found to represent the Ghost type is… playing tricks and doing jump scares.

The goal isn’t to win, it’s to make the opponent panic if for even a moment.

I had an Alolan Marowak with the bone club and belly drum. This was something of a test to my challengers. If they let the Marowak do the thing, they didn’t have the right to win.

I also had a froslass that had Cursed Body, Spikes, Ice Beam, Taunt, and Destiny Bond. It was my opener for the majority of battles.

Obviously I had a Gengar. It was the shiny Halloween one from back in the day, and it mega evovled. You pretty much nailed the moveset.

Recent addition that I absolutely adore is Galarian Corsola. Cursed Body, Strength Sap, Mirror Coat, Curse, and Taunt. Holds Eviolite.

As for my ace… it was Jellicent. It had Taunt, Recover, Scald, and Hex. It was defensively focused and held a weakness policy.

Ghost types have been near and dear to my heart for a long, long time.

last respect houndstone is crazy, especially with such a stacked team. Imagine the trainer barely managing to scrape their way through all of that only for the leader whose been silent the whole time to just start cackling and send that monster out.

A good idea I just had tor a ghost type gym leader would be for a person who can see and speak with the dead pretending to be a trainer but is haunted by a powerful and skilled spirit that has all the skill in battling so kinda like YuGiOh the spirit would take over during battles but out of battles the shy outcast is in charge.. Or maybe make them a E4 member ooo man I hope this is a thing that Gamefreak/Pokemon Company dose lol

One of my favorite bits from my imagined region based on Texas is a Ghost type specialist named Dolores, an old woman who lives in a ghost town by herself. Her ace Pokemon is a Ghost/Normal haunted piano based on a player piano. Ghost/Normal so it has sound move STAB with Hyper Voice. I envision her having Brambleghast, Banette, Chandelure, and Drifblim, as well as maybe either one more regional Ghost type, or Shedinja. She would not speak, but rather would sing an unsettling, cryptic, rambling song. you can hear the song faintly, accompanied by the piano, from the moment you step into town. You would have to enter several buildings and quiet the restless spirits before getting the backdoor key to the saloon, where you would face Dolores in a battle. After beating her, you would fall unconscious for a moment, and then find yourself right outside the town, with the song faintly audible again.

it's unclear if she's even alive or a ghost herself. Once you beat her, you can re-enter the town but you'll never be able to meet her again, only hear her singing. Elsewhere people will advise you against even visiting the ghost town.

actually the nature of Dolores and who/what she really is would be integral to the plot of this region. While at first it would seem just a completely unconnected creepy setpiece, there would be a TWIST later on.

Being a huge fan of the ghost/steel gang, I was absolutely going to mention them, but honestly, I appreciate and dig the explanation as to why they aren't part of the team, and you are absolutely correct, it really would be just slapping strong Pokemon on to a team for the sake of it, while they absolutely aren't needed thematically.

0:21 I think this guy was named Grings? Griggs? Something like that? I remember he was a surprisingly vile movie villain. I think he was the mayor of his town, had magic eye powers to see the future, and strangled a Zorua onscreen a couple of times.

*Edit:* Okay, so it was Grings Kodai. He also strangled a Celebi.

Lmao the sheer amount of alliterations at the being of the video made this top tier in my eyes

I love the personality you're trying to create for this gym leader on the side of the actual team building. Me and my girlfriend have been discussing our own designs for gym leaders as well. Mine being a steel type leader managing a machine shop and a manufacturing facility, and hers was a poison type gym constisting of a poisonous plant garden. Basically the literal location The Poison Garden, where there is a collection of poison and toxic plants and other things at the location for the purposes of study and awareness. Kinda like a museum of poison.
