Are aspen loudspeakers planars?

Paul has always raved about the sound of planars, so why are they not in the aspen loudspeakers? Or, are they?

I heard the FR30 at the Ｈong Kong High End Audio Show 2023 a couple weeks ago. I was really impressed. I am looking forward to hear the smaller one FR20, cause it may fit my room easily.

Years ago some friends and I set up an amateur recording studio and for playback I mounted a pair of Magneplanar 1D speakers in a wall that separated two rooms; one room a performance area, and the other a large storage area. I did this to save space, but soon discovered the sonics were amazing . The playback was a close up monitoring situation, so imaging wasn't ideal but the sound was terrific . In particular the bass was awesome with no cancellation to detract, and the resonance of the 1D s is truly subsonic . Simply put the bass was the deepest, clearest, and best defined Ive ever heard . Not practical for most people but if I can ever afford to build in a similar situation I'm all over it .... that system was, to this day, far better than any I've ever heard . With planars the constraints are surface area, resonance, and eliminating cancellation ....if you ever get a chance ...try it !

As a Magnapan owner(with a sub) i have never heard a speaker in this pricerange that can compete. Not all of us have unlimited budgets.

I added subs to magies in 1978 8 in Rockford, 2 per channel and built active xover. I was slightly ahead of my time. ( still am@ 70 years old) 500+ systems. I am using duo vertical 2 in full range for mids and adding planar grs next month.

You have obviously never heard a pair of Soundlab A1's properly setup and driven. they have amazing bass, honestly the best bass ive ever heard. yes they are large but planars and in this case electrostatis can and do have amazing bass.

I suspect one aspect of the question was implied but not stated-Specifically that you liked magnepams because they are planars AND because they are dipoles. With that in mind, do you think anything has been lost in your implementation of the planar drivers as forward facing on, y?

I was just watching your video about why dont speakers use electromagnets .
My question is, why aren't electromagnets used in place of spider ? You could then have variable damping right ?
With the correct software driving this electromagnetic spider it seems you could improve transient response greatly ?

Do those have 8in drivers? I still have a pair of 1d and in my listening room they have quite a bit of bass. Not sub base as your saying. In living room they never did well on lows.

Saying that planars don't have good bass is misleading. They actually have very accurate, quick bass. They just don't have LOUD bass. You need to make that distinction. And in small to very small rooms, they don't usually need to be played loudly anyway, so the bass keeps up with the mids and highs very well. Planars have limitations in dynamics and how loud they can play, but that's it. If you want louder and deeper bass, employ larger panels.
