Appeasement didn't fail as much. The Western European powers knew war was on the rise, but they were not ready. The primary point of appeasement was to delay this war, until they were ready themselves. Hitler was geared for war in 1938, trying to push over the edge to cause a breakout, however France and Britian needed more time, so they made a deal to give him the Sudetenland.
