I was Jon’s 7th grade social studies teacher for a semester at Eliot JHS in Altadena, California. One day when I was preparing to administer a test, I told the class they had 10 minutes to study before the test would start. I saw Jon writing something on the palm of his hand and decided I would sneak up behind him, tap him on his shoulder and surprise him. I did just that. But he held his palm wide open and showed me the words he was writing. He said “I’m writing a song, Mr. Williams.” And indeed he was writing a song! That’s how I learned he was a musician.
