There is nothing particularly new here. As far as I can judge from this clip Martin Rees is talking about the future of our species not its past, which of course has been shaped by natural selection.
I recall Richard Dawkins saying something similar.

As a result of Darwinian natural selection we have reached a stage where we are can take control of our future development as a species.

Evolution does not end with mankind, as Pierre Teilhard de Chardin said. If we can avoid making ourselves extinct, the stars beckon.
Of course, the viewership of this channel may have a hard time accepting Darwinian evolution, never mind transhumanism.
