Always clean your lenses and sensor before paid shoots! I've had to re-shoot an entire day before because of a spec of dust on my sensor that ruined all the footage w/out me noticing it on my tiny monitor while shooting.

It's interesting that you talk about having a check list. (1:53). Pilots have checklists, and they go through that same check list each and every time they prepare for a flight regardless of whether this is their first flight or 10, 000th flight. Photographers and videographers should do the same.

Thanks for not being a shill, Harv. You're informative and there are no ads. Many thumbs up. 9 months into my 1st real movie I wish I'd known not to reuse cards and thereby erasing shot scenes. But when you make a movie with only a meagre income as budgetary source it seems like a good way to save. Never again.

One mistake I narrowly avoided.. ALWAYS have 2 sources of audio- particularly if it's a recording that you cannot monitor live. I had a tascam dr07mkii with a lav clipped to someone for the whole interview and unfortunately the whole audio file was corrupted when I reviewed after the cameras stopped. Luckily had a rode ntg2 hooked straight to the camera as a secondary source. But it would have been a bad situation had I not had that!

Yeah. Really good video. I would add buying backup batteries for your camera and making sure they are all charged. I’ve been advised having 3 is good practice.

When renting equipments, make sure to test everything before walking out the door.

Forgetting to change the color temp when moving from inside to out. Only done it twice, but still annoying. Also, pressing record and jumping right into action (usually on a flycam) only to realize you didn't hit record properly done this so many time.

I'd like to add that if you're travelling, your phone is a really good second camera. Set it to timelapse on the side while you shoot something else or are taking a break or getting something to eat, or record B-Roll with it while walking, to avoid draining the batteries of your main camera.

Nice video! I would say as well to NOT DO everything that client says. Sometimes THEY think that things can be fixed in post. Sometimes they don't see details in the shot that you are seeing.
Extra batteries and a cellphone that can shoot 4k also can save your life.
Dont forget the tapes to stick a gopro somewhere and label your gear.

I was shooting a wedding and wasn't paying attention and formatted my memory card... Luckily the couple was cool with it and we re-shot certain scenes but I was so mad at myself

Not checking the recording indicator. If for whatever reason you start/stop a recording but the camera did not register, you end up cutting every time you intend to start rolling vice versa. Usually happens when run&gunning cos you're paying more attention to your surroundings than your camera.

Luckily I have OCD so I pack well in advance and double or triple check everything. And I always take care of my cables, OCD again lol

Your footage looks sharper and sharper Harv. Beautiful studio setup and nice clean audio. Maybe the trick of sharp and good looking footage is the export settings. Export 4k to 4k and not 4k to full hd?

NEVER format my cards apart from when they are new! You have made me question my practices now!! The one thing I do do is clean my equipment the moment o get back from a shoot though as like you I’m rough with my equipment 🙈
