Chasing down electrical issues on your bike can be a frustrating process. Eliminating components from the possible list of problems is the best way to track down your issue. We show you a simple way to check and see if your stator is not functioning correctly and eliminate that as a possible issue before moving on to other components. You will need a multimeter to perform the tests.

Excellent video. Helped me eliminate the stator as my problem. Replaced $50 voltage regulator, problem solved. Thank you

This is very good. Clear and slow explained so someone unexperienced can learn. Good vibes coming off from the man

The first test was a short test to ground, this is to test if one of the windings have a short to the chassis.

There was no link for the battery testing video.

So I’m not to confident in my results but my stator passed the continuity test and failed the ohm test. I tested the multimeter before starting and confirmed it was reading at a 0.00. Only one phase read at a 0.01. The other two phases read at a 0.00. I’m pretty sure that screams bad stator but a yes or no and some direction on how to move forward would be much appreciated. Bikes been kept in the garage for 3 months now and it’s just starting to get nice and cool out I’d love to get back on the road. Plz help lol.

I have a question. I did all the test . I have no ground shortage. I have nothing on the ohms test it's 00.0 does this mean my stator is bad

What if I see no change in the plug when doing the ohms test?

Thank you, this is avery good expanation of what is required to test the stator. It makes the job easier when the job is laid out clearly and simply.

There might be confusion here about the alarm during the continuity check. My MM gives a buzz when there is continuity and stays silent, but on 1 when there is not

My three prongs stator wire got cut two of the wires cut off from the front motor mount. Don’t understand how or why. Stator and regulator are only three months old. I’m going to check the stator like you showed. But the plug is no good and I can’t find a replacement without buying a new stator any help would be appreciated. Thanks

If you have an alarm installed on your bike & you don’t keep it on a battery tender or you don’t ride enough, or you don’t disconnect the ground wire, the alarm itself will drain the battery drastically. This kept happening on my Sportster 48 with a gel battery. In this case, get a lithium battery with a built in tester (BTS) and it will shut itself off after it detects low charging levels.

Ok, it passed the first 2 tests, the AC output said open line no ac output. Any ideas on the issue.

I have a 2019 Indian FTR that drains its battery while riding to the point of it shutting off every one in a while. It never fails to cold start tho.

Manual Says the stator should be giving 27 vac at idle and 34 at 2, 000 rpm, but im only getting 20 and 31 respectively.

Is my stator that bad and needs replacing ?

The regulator maintained the Battery at 14.5v, but dont know if the low power from the stator overworks the regulator and thats when my battery drains while riding ?

Excellent video explaining everything. The one huge problem I have is that my bike won’t start so I can’t check that last test. Power goes on, speedometer doesn’t go on and nothing happens when I hit start. I tested the battery and it’s good. Its a 2007 Sporty 1200.. Any thoughts? Thank you

At my diode test my multimeter just showed OL through all 3 wires. Does this mean my stator is grounded?
