Hi All,
I know its been some time but I was busy helping my son convert a 1996 Toyota Tacoma into a electric vehicle. We started this in Oct 2019 and finished in June 2022. My son was 13 when he started and finished at 16 with his license ready to drive and have fun. Below is a link to the build page and his full video. We were able to get help from ElectricGT for the battery box and they were great to work with! I hope you all like the build and we are happy to provide any information to others looking to do the same.

This is perfect. I literally have the exact same project truck. Same color and everything. Thank you for the blog link. That will be an extremely helpful resource. Great job. This would of been a fantastic first vehicle.

This is optimal. You got the ability to pick out a body you like, or fit in if you are tall or wide, and elcetrify it to beat all the eco norms that will come and the damn vehicle will still drive the same cuz you ONLY REPLACED THE MOTOR. Now that's what I'm talking about.

It would be cool to skip the entire transmission, drive shaft, and rear solid axle(save a lot of weight), if you put like a Tesla model 3 drive unit back there with independent rear suspension. It comes off as an entire cradle, which includes the sub frame, suspension links, hubs, brakes, motor, differential, CVs axles all in one convenient package. They are like $3000 in used parts. Plus you get the power / efficiency boost of tesla drive unit ( 310 lb-ft tq, 275HP)

This is awesome, this got cross posted to a facebook group that was curious why you opted for the 5 speed transmission. I'm guessing it cuts cost or ease of design since you could just use the existing mounting positions and drivetrain?

Thanks for sharing this with the community, you folks did a really nice job! I am wondering if the vehicle sees salty roads in the winter and if so, have there been any unforseen issues with salty moisture getting into unwanted areas, like the battery containers, or anywhere else? I am in upstate New York where road salt is extensively used in the winter and thought this might be a concern if i did a similar conversation. Looking forward to hearing about your experiences in this regard. Thanks!

It's been over two years since this conversion was done. How about an update? Has the truck conversion been successful and is there anything you would do differently? Thanks!

I'm extremely interested in converting my standard 1998 Tacoma but for 150 mile distance. I tried your son's link and got a 404 error. Could I see your parts list and prices? Looks really clean what you and your son did. Love it.

I see you still have the manual transmission. How do you know when to shift without hearing rpm?

Thinking about converting my 2017 GMC Canyon 4x4 when it inevitably dies I just want 200 kms of range in winter and 4x4 to work so I can use it for camping and construction work instead of forking out $90k for a new ev truck
