Songkran 2022 in Koh Phangan Thailand is not something we expected when coming here. It took us by surprise but what a great surprise it was. It's basically the world's BIGGEST waterfight!

The waterfight is to celebrate the Buddha New Year! Songkran is the first day out of three celebration days and happens every single year here in Thailand and the waterfight symbolizes the cleansing of oneself to get rid of all the bad of the previous year so that you can enter the new year with only good.

Songkran festival is one of the most important festivals that has been performed for a long time, not only in Thailand but also in other countries such as Laos and Cambodia.
เทศกาลวันสงกรานต์ เป็นเทศกาลสำคัญที่มีมานาน เช่น ลาว และกัมพูชา
It is also known as Thai Traditional New Year’s Day, which falls during April of 13th – 15th every year.
เทศกาลวันสงกรานต์ เริ่มตั้งแต่ 13 – 15เมษายน ของทุกปี
The word “Songkran” derives from Sanskrit language and means to pass or to move into.
คำว่า “สงกรานต์” มาจากภาษาสันสกฤต แปลว่า ก้าวขึ้น ย่างขึ้น
Songkran festival takes place over three days every year, on the 13th – 15th of April.
วันสงกรานต์มีทั้งสิ้น 3 วัน คือวันที่ 13 – 15 เมษายน ของทุกปี
Do you know of any activities during Songkran Festival?
Yes, sure…Songkran is very famous.
We know that most of people splash the water on each other.
But I also know Songkran tradition is an important custom for Thai families, community and religion.
วันสงกรานต์นี้มีชื่อเสียงมากๆ แต่นอกจากนี้ประเพณีสงกรานต์เป็นประเพณีที่สำคัญด้านครอบครัว, ชุมชน, สังคม และศาสนา
It is a great opportunity for family members to gather together, so…what do you usually do when you see each other on that day?

We express our respect to our elders by pouring scented water onto our parents’ and grandparents’ hands.
แปลว่า ลงบนมือคุณพ่อ คุณแม่ หรือ ปู่ย่า ตายาย
The elders in turn wish the youngsters good luck and prosperity, so Songkran Day is also Family Day.
แปลว่า พวกท่านจะอวยพรให้เราโชคดี เจริญรุ่งเรือง ดังนั้นวันสงกรานต์ จึงถือเป็นวันครอบครัวด้วย
