As a Canadian who's lived in the US, I can say that it is a difference in English customs and has nothing to do with French. In the US, people often refer to "offsides" and "warmups" whereas in Canada it is just simply "offside" or "warmup".

It’s a singular Final. You don’t play two Stanley Cup Finals. I don’t think it’s a French/English thing.

"It is a singular event, comprised of a series of individual games. While up to seven games may be played, each game is an individual piece; together, the individual games comprise the Final just as multiple slices comprise a pie.

"The individual games are part of the Final but each is not a Final of itself —- which is what each game would have to be for the plural ('finals') to be used in reference to a multiple number of those games

Part of calling it the Stanley Cup Final is the fact that the cup predates the league

They both should be singular because all the games in the series work together to comprise the series. It's one series, therefore one final; so, it should be "Final."

You might have some Seattle Supersonics fans who might have some objection to naming anything after David Stern or calling him the best anything.

I recall someone once said, it is ONE cup. Thus final, every other sport gives out a new trophy every year.

I think maybe the NHL uses Final to refer to the series, of which there is one.

And the NBA Finals refers to the games of which there are up to 7.

Becuase its the final series. You dont play multiple championship series. One series, thus singular.

The Stanley Cup is called such. As, it was presented to the winner by Lord Stanley . Who financed and, created the trophy . As, he felt the best club should be presented with some form of reward.
Thus the name the Stanley Cup . This is knowledge you can learn in the Canadian Hockey Hall Of Fame . In Toronto Canada.

Finals makes no sense. It's called the Final because it is the final matchup. Only two teams left. There aren't multiple final matchups. There are quarterfinals and semi-finals, because there are still more than two teams playing.

The finals referred to the set of games played to determine the winner, Don Strickland again

The Stanley cup was created as a chalenge cup, liek the FA cup in soccer, by theGovernor General of Canada Lord Stanley. As a chalenge cup, every team in the country would enter it and compete, in a tournament. 2 teams would reach the finalfor the cup. Therefore the Stanley Cup final. The European soccer chalenge cup do the same thing. It is probably not a language thing because it is the same in the 3 languages that I understand, English, French and German. My guess is that the s in the NBA finals, comes from the fact that it is the end of the playoffs....both are plural.

World series and a world champion in a sport with only American and Canadian teams. What's that about.
