What Happens When You Buy Fake Facebook Followers?

I know it's tempting, especially when you've just launched a new Facebook page for your business and you've only got 12 followers, and one of them is your mom, and four of them are your mom's friends.

It's embarrassing and it's disheartening if you don't have that many followers, so you might get tempted to buy fake followers.
But what does this do?

I know the thinking behind it is, you're thinking it's like the tip jar, and if you just stack the jar with a couple of fake followers, then some real followers will come by, but that's not actually what happens in real life.

What happens is, first of all, you don't fool anybody, okay? If you go from 12 followers one night, and the next day you've got 10,000 followers, it's going to look suspicious.

People are going to think something's up. Also, if you have 10,000 followers and you have very little engagement, you have very few likes and shares and conversations happening on your page, people are also going to suspect that something is up.

You're not really helping yourself in that way. In fact, you're kind of making yourself look a little deceitful, for one thing.

Even if you do manage to convince everyone that you do have that many followers, even if you're able to fool your audience, you know who you're not fooling are the people at Facebook, at Instagram, at Twitter, who very diligently create these algorithms to search for pages that are up to shenanigans.

They're going to know. How did you get so many followers in so little time, and how come all your followers are in Thailand, and your Facebook page is for a Mexican restaurant in Quebec? It's a little weird, right?

Like, how'd you get those, and they're not engaging with you, and they each belong to several groups and are fans of several pages that have nothing to do with one another.

They're going to know something is up, and if you're not careful, what's going to happen is… these algorithms that Facebook creates and Instagram creates and Twitter creates are going to lower your visibility on their platform so that even your real, authentic followers, your own mom, isn't going to see you on Facebook anymore.

You've shot yourself in the foot, and you've destroyed your own credibility. You're deadening your chances of having real meaningful engagement on a social media platform.

What's truly terrible is there are agencies out there who will promise a small business or an entrepreneur that they will get them 10,000 or 100,000 followers in a short amount of time, and what they do is they take the client's money, and they make the purchase.

These fake followers are never going to buy from that audience. Yeah, they now have a huge following. They "delivered" on their promise, but they haven't added value for their client. There's a distinction here.

You, the business owner, need to be aware of this, and ask yourself, are you more interested in having tons of followers, or are you more interested in growing your business in a meaningful way?
