Laura Dern Talks About Her Son Being Stung

It was a dramatic day at the beach when Laura Dern's son was stung by a stingray. She told Ellen the whole story.

I have also been stung by a stingray at Santa Monica beach! It was crazy! I was bleeding for so long and the pain was crazy. I still have a scar after 2 years because the stinger went in one side of my foot and came out the other. I had to go to Urgent Care and they had no idea what to do because being stung is so rare.

I'm like, so he got stung by a bee! But a fucking sting ray!?! wow! Isn't that how Steve Erin died? Luckily he's ok. My goodness the pain!

Growing up in Australia some of my clearest memories from the summer months are of us as kids running out of the ocean onto the shore with big red welts all over us screaming "I GOT ANOTHER STING!" which the adults would respond to by throwing a bottle of vinegar all over us and watching us sprint back into the surf :') we used to give each other points for every sting, 50 points if you got one on the face!!

It's so true, it hurts like hell and it's worst when you get sting in the middle of the Amazonas where there is nothing around you!!

Question though - isn't warm water and vinegar the same as urine? I mean, it isn't, but the properties required - warm, liquid, low pH (or is it high? can't remember) - absolutely identical? I think that urine is the emergency one because it's *ahem* always on the tap, if you catch my drift. Not sure though.

I got stung by a jelly fish 2 years ago while on vacation. I passed out n woke up a few hours later at a hospital it was Rlly bad I couldn't walk or feel my legs (I got stung on my legs) and the doctors told me that it was a good thing I survived.


In reality, nothing like that happened. I just sat on the beach while my brother was throwing sand at it.

It's not a matter of if you pee on it or not. It appears that most animal stings are basic/alkaline which means that anything acidic (like vinegar or urine) neutralises the sting (year 10 science, yo) so both would work. Here in Australia there is vinegar at the beach, either with the lifeguards or once I saw a bottle in a little container by path that had a notice on it that said treat stings with vinegar.

Fun fact peeing won't do anything just take them or yourself to the first aider, there should be one on the beach.

I stepped on a stingray luckily i didn't get stung! Those things are so slimy it's crazy
