I really hope one day Mexico becomes a safe and prosperous country. They have so much potential for it too. Hard working and friendly people, great food, amazing history, culture and architecture. I just got back from visiting the capital and I fell in love with the country. Hopefully this will be Mexico's decade. They deserve it.

And don't go alone. A single person is much more vulnerable than two people

I live in northwest Indiana. When she was alive my mom was so terrified every time I went to Chicago alone that I was going to be murdered, despite the fact that she taught me all the proper precautions. I go during the day, if I have to be there at night I will ask someone to walk me to my car if I need to, I’m aware of my surroundings and always sober… I would have missed some great experiences just for the fact that I couldn’t find someone to go with me if I wasn’t willing to go alone. You can live your life full of regret or you can take chances with reasonable precautions (like you are doing) and have a great time. I couldn’t let her anxiety stop me from living.

Road tripping can be a bit sketch. It’s the sleeping in the car in Mexico that I find adds to the danger. Depends a lot on the region but still.

I'm from Baltimore. I know other Baltimorons who escaped our city's violence and now live in Merida, Mexico. So when people ask about Mexico's violence, I just chuckle.

I’m part Mexican and most of my family won’t go down there anymore. I also worked for the court for years and we would get letters from relatives we were trying to have the juveniles potentially move in with to stay with family if nobody on our side of the border was able to, and several would tell us they were not in a safe area and that their mail was also messed with a lot due to the cartels etc. Up to you if you want to take the chance but my luck isn’t always the best. I think I would feel better if I felt like I blended in more. I speak some Spanish but am not fully fluent.

I didn’t catch her name but another traveler(van) in Mexico said to make copies of your identification and place in a clear plastic baggie to give to the police if pulled over. She said if you hand them your original they will make you pay to get it back.

On all trips I've done, be it Europe, US, Asia, it's as if my late Dad's advice is still fresh. I make it a point as if I came from work, that is I'm safely tucked in my room. Dad said to be home when night is about to set in because that's the time the bad elements go out. Done my laundry for day's worn clothes because I travel light (but I always wanted to have clean and freshly-washed clothes), eaten my bought dinner, and studying my notes for following day's activities. Anyway, I'm not interested to go out at night, even if it's a safe place because sights are not seen in photographs anyway.

My mom is from Colima and my dad is from Michoacán. We plan to go. Might not be as bad if your used to or really from here. I’m from the USA, born and raised is Northern California. And we plan to go by the end of this year. Wish me luck. 🍀☘️

Everyone told me this too when I said I wanted to go to Brazil, I went, and it was totally fine, just smart to have a male friend who speaks brazilian Portuguese

Still not visiting that country even with your happy music. I'm not risking it and it's really not that worth it.

Thoroughly agree. I've been bussing through Mexico myself. You always take precautions but, don't ever let it hold you back

Thank y’all for your testimonies. Many people who have never visited or stayed, like to contribute to this massive misconception that you aren’t safe anywhere in Mexico. It’s ignorant to speak on something you don’t know or know very little about.

Exactly, common sense will typically reduce your actual risk far below the official state department advisories.
