I’m tired of people saying that Downs Syndrome people have a disability. How wrong they are! As a kid I went to a summer camp with Downs Syndrome, Autistic, normal kids. It was a combo day camp and school. I learned how to student teach them all. The autistic kids had memory like a steel trap and not only could read but knew the books word for word by heart. Teaching these special kids math they could calculate in their heads. I need my fingers or a calculator. There was a girl whose passed away many years was independent minded and had a deadly sense of humor! At the end of the 8 weeks we all went horse back riding and Charlie, who had Downs Syndrome had never been on a horse before and the horses we were all given were spirited not slow plodding animals. We’ll Charlie was at the end of the line and we told him to catch up and what did he do? As if he’d been a horse rider his whole life which he wasn’t he was a city boy like the rest of us, picked up his reins and galloped to catch up. He was in total control and I was amazed. I’ll never forget how much he laughed when he caught up. I had just started to learn how to ride and just gave some pointers on how to mount. I never got to the stage of galloping. Years later I did gallop and almost fell off. Charlie stayed on like a pro. Those with Downs Syndrome can learn. They can hold jobs. With help they can live independently. And who doesn’t need help with things! In the early 90’s there was a Downs Syndrome kid who graduated college which is pretty darn impressive when so called normal people who quit college or think college is one big drinking and partying place. Those who discriminate have lower I.Q.
