Not having any inline fuses with the Alinco worried me so Ive fitted a 25 amp blade fuse holder. The control knobs also get repainted with Humbrol paint. Tested on the 305 net and working well.

This is a great idea and a very safe upgrade as well. That blade fuse could possibly be a lower value but that is just a novice guess on my part. It'll be great to see what the professional radio folk have to say about it.

I've heard if you take the weight out of the vfo knob it helps prolong the life of the knob, do you find the weight to heavy at all for yours

Hi Fred, Just to say, I enjoyed your video on the Alinco power lead. I would not have thought about using modelling paint for the dials, excellent tip for other radios too. I think I have Found the Talk Back on the CRT 6900N, If you go into the Menu and look for NOG that should be it.

made a few if these up matey that will work for ya just some tips I have learnt, the terminals I have started to use these types of connectors, and I purchased the proper crimp tool for these was only £10 and then I solder and heat shrink just to take some strain off the connector. The other thing I used to do was to add the grippy ties to neaten up the cable, I then found these would catch on other cables or other things when routing or moving the cable around lol. Now I just use 10 to 15mm of tapestry intervals. Fuse rating is good though all my hf rigs are 25amp fuses with a little bit of ohms law it will confirm ;) one thing I have been using is making fly leads with Anderson connectors on then I can take my radios portable or If i move the shack around it’s really easy to do I then put another Anderson connector on the radio lead. ;) have a good one fella and catch ya at 4pm on the 305

Hi Fred again another great video. I’ve used Humbrol paint years ago when I worked in a Bike shop when I first started work. I also worked in a paint factory for years. The tags on your wire are the same as what I used for my 9900 like you I don’t like just wrapping them round the connectors.

Fuses aren't really to protect the radio, they're to protect the environment the radio is in. Fuses burn out way too slowly to protect anything more delicate or sensitive than a light bulb. But if the cable insulation is compromised, a strong power supply or car battery could easily cause enough heat to set things (like carpet, car seats, etc.) alight.

If something compromises the insulation (feet wearing through it in the car foot-well, cat chewing on it, grommet worn through in a firewall), it can short out and get very very hot. A fuse on the red lead will stop the cable from drawing current from the source. That's all you need if that source is the only path for the current to take, but this is rarely the case. If the negative cable shorts on another current source (eg. any hot lead in a car falling across the body of the radio), it can still overheat the negative wire and cause a hazard. It's probably not as likely as the radio's hot lead itself causing the problem, but that's why a fuse on the negative lead is also a good idea. The fuses should be installed as close to the current source as possible, to keep the unprotected cable length to a minimum.

Again, none of this is going to save the radio itself from damage in an over-current fault. It's purely fire safety.

I would personally put a fuse in line on the negative wire Fred in case of a big surge

fuses are NOT in the radio comes with 30 Amp fuses on both (+) and (-) i use molex yellow lugs that i crimp with my ideal ratcheting crimper 10 AWG wire also plan on using the remote faceplate only requires a cat 5e cable up to 150ft could mount the chassis at the antenna in a NEMA 4 enclosure i have my degree in electronics and will be extra class hopefully in a couple weeks
