Hoka Mach 5 - First Run

The Mach 4 was a breakout hit. So when Hoka announced that they were changing up the midsole foam on the Mach 5, they potentially could have been messing with a good thing. Did this gamble pay off? Or was this an unnecessary risk?

As a non-prototype, heavier runner I've found the Mach series in general to be fun while it lasts. I seldom get 300 miles from the shoe before either the outsole is smooth or the midsole is flat. That said, it's a fun 300 miles. The upper still looks good at 300, but it's a dead shoe underneath.

As a bigger/heavier guy, I like my Mach 5s for flat tempo/track, but on descents they blow through the soft Profly+ foam and slam into the firm EVA below. This is also more likely to happen as the temperature goes up and the Profly+ becomes even softer. So for lighter runners or flats only, they are a fast fun shoe. But for heavier runners in warm climates or descents, I'd recommend something more firm with a more gradual foam transition to the sole.

Hoka Mach4 was my daily trainer for the last year and really it is one of the most comfortable shoes that does it all from long runs to interval. I ordered my Mach 5 and waiting for it.
Thanks 🙏🏽 for this nice and informative review

Absolutely loved my Mach 4s. Brought them to honestly 750mi, granted I’m a broke college kid. Just got the Mach 5s and love how similar but upgraded it feels.

100% agree with the narrow lace opening, I feel like I really have to pull the lace opening very close together to get a nice fit, otherwise, the Mach5 is a great shoe.

Hoka 4 fitted me like a glove, such a comfy upper and one that disappeared in the foot - looking forward to buying the 5 once in the UK. Great review as always

As a heavyweight slow pace new runner, mach 4 has helped me through out my goals of 5k run every day. Crazy comfort, great energy return, superb shoes. Cant wait to get mach 5

I am at the point where I am over Hokas and probably will not be spending much $ on them moving forward. I don’t think their foams last that long, especially the Mach and especially as a daily trainer. I still have the Mach 4 but it is starting to feel dead for me at 100 miles. Looking to get more bang for my buck these days.

Thanks for this review. This is great to hear. Having been a big fan of the Mach 4, I recently picked up another pair, at recent discounted prices, not knowing whether the Mach 5 could be trusted and was worth the extra coin. After seeing your review and one other positive one, maybe the Mach 5s will be next for me.

Love the Mach 4. Loving the white color way too for those summer miles. Gonna wait for a comparison video with the speed 3

love to see you embracing other color ways. That white on white looks so fresh and so clean!

💯 with the lace loops touching when you tie down! The Torrent 1 and 2 did that to me and I had a hard time getting a good mid foot fit.

I never got my hands (or feet) on the Mach 4 because I decided to try the Novablast2 instead for my easier efforts. I wish I'd gone the other way, so I'm very happy to hear the Mach 5 is even better! Thanks for this one Mike!

And there available now, so we don’t have to endure the long wait to try it out! (Looking at you ASICS…)

I loved Mach 4 and purchased the Mach 5.
I buy Hoka because I do like the shoes but as much because of what I believe is unparalleled support of their runners( sponsored )

Great first impression. I loved the Mach 4, bought two pairs and got about 300 miles out of them. I am on fence about this update because of the lack of longevity. Would love to hear what you think, Novablast 3 or Mach 5 for daily trainer?
